How important should board pass rates be when ranking programs for the match? I know that I will take enough time to study for the boards and pass but I was wondering if I should use this as a tool to evaluate the programs in my top 3.

It was pretty important for me when figuring out where to apply. But once I got to the interview, I asked if everyone took boards, was there board prep, did they get time for board prep, etc. I was not terribly surprised by some of the answers I got, but a program where everyone takes boards and everyone passes first time looked better to me than a program where only half the residents took boards and passed.

It's important, but in my opinion, should not be the most important thing you're looking for in a residency.

Most top programs are anywhere between 90-100% board pass rate. People fail every year even at the best places, for whatever reason that you'll never find out. As long as the board percentage isn't underwhelming.
