Disclaimer: This is in the order of my ROL, so it reflects a ranking actually by program. I do not intend to be ranking people. The motivation was to simply share how awesome these PDs were- I truly enjoyed meeting everyone of them. Tremendous mentors for anyone lucky enough to be in their program.
Felicia Smith. New program director for MGH McLean, taking over for past president of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) Kathy Sanders. Felicia is a really warm and thoughtful person. Her first recruiting class, she took the time to meet every single applicant. She is a former grad, director of MGH's APS for a few years before becoming APD, and then taking a turn working in Vermont. An advocate for minority mental health, detail-oriented and experienced with the residency program, and a warm person makers her, per another PD, a ROCK SOLID PD.
Ron Rieder. A hero to many PDs in the Northeast, simply because he was recruited from Columbia as their former PD and given a "golden package" to change residency education at Mount Sinai for five years. He has decided to commit for another four years at least, nurturing his most ambitious residency education project- an NIMH-funded PhD for psychiatry residents. Savvy, upfront, and a grandfather at heart... he is one of the shining bright stars among the leadership of Mount Sinai.
Carol Bernstein. Former president of the APA. Over a decades experience as PD. She is single-handedly running NYU's program as sole PD, after the PD and APD from the last few years unexpectedly quit early in the interview season. Warm, supportive, and a real mother bear to her 14 crazy residents that decided to try taming the wildness of Bellevue.
Richard Summers. UPenn. A renowned psychoanalyst, Past President of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) and chairs committees of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Tremendously warm and supportive, with a more mellow recruitment style compared to his NYC counterpart Ron Rieder.
Deborah Cowley. Simply one of the program directors that is easy to talk to... with a very west coast hands-off style that is surprising welcoming and supportive.
Rohrbaugh, Yale.
Marshall Forstein, Cambridge.
Alan Louie, formerly San Mateo, now Stanford.
Benjamin Sheldon, UMass.
Sidney Zisook, UCSD.
All ten above are career psychiatry teachers and educators, some younger and motivated while others are older and more experienced. And at the core, they are all tremendously wonderful thoughtful and supportive people to have met on the interview trail.
