Can anyone explain this concept to me?

I'm not really sure where it is from or anything (written in my notes), so I can't cite the reference...

The general idea is that there isn't sufficient time for heat to be transferred. In a compressor, for example, there is so much air flowing through at such high flow rate that the air can't push thermal energy out through the walls of the compressor, tubing, etc. fast enough.
