A cardiologist recommended the Rappaport-Sprague stethoscope, but I have read that this is no longer made. I found a "Sprague Rappaport" by MDF http://shop.mdfdirect.com/product.sc?productId=11, but I am not sure this is the same thing. Can anyone enlighten me? If the original Rappaport-Sprague is not available, what do you recommend in its place?

Try posting in the allo or osteo forums. You will probably get better responses...

The "real" Rappaport-Sprague was made by Hewlett-Packard, and later by Philips. It is no longer in production.

Generic look-alikes are made by many companies but are not the same.

As alternatives, top-of-the-line stethoscopes by Welch Allyn and Littman are popular. I own a DRG Staff Cardiology in addition to a Philips Rappaport-Sprague, and it is also similar in quality.

Definately don't go with the sprague-rappaport. They run cheap, but you get what you pay for. I've been an EMT for 2 years now and I bought the sprague its better then the cheapo ones by far. But i've used littman steths and they are definately the way to go.👍

Figure get a good one once, insteads of buying a cheap one then deciding to get a better one.

littman runs between 90-200 depending which one you get...

p.s.: in light of the post above me. the sprague I own is not phillips, and i'd expect all other replica spragues are just as subpar as mine. 😉

Thanks. I was considering the Littmann Cardiology III unless I can get one of the original Rappaport-Sprague "donated" from someone I know. The Littmann seems pretty popular here. Does having the stethoscope engraved cut down on theft?

Rappaport-Sprague steths are crappy, which is why they're so inexpensive. I had one given to me back when I was an EMT. Go for a littmann cardio III.

I could only imagine that it does; at the least it would make recovery easier. Allheart.com has a pretty good deal on the Littman Cardio III, and will engrave the tubing for you, total is around $160.00

They won't check for engraving when they grab it

Also, if you're not in a hurry I would recommend trying a couple before you buy. There are people who start with Cardiology III, which seems to be the default med student choice today, and when they are less than satistified end up switching to Welch Allyn.

If you're starting med school next year, wait until then because the reps will likely visit your school, let you try the products, and offer discounts.

I went with the Welch Allyn Harvey Elite since I'd heard there's a good number of medical schools that want a normal diaphragm and bell. It's totally overkill for what I do now, and probably for any specialty I'd end up going into, but it's immeasurably better than the cheap rappaport-sprague style that my ambulance company keeps in the rigs (great sound quality, and seals out almost all noise other than what's coming from the other end of the scope). I paid $110 on ebay including shipping, and got it brand new, with several sets of earpieces, pediatric diaphragm, two nametags (one that can be written on, the other that can be engraved), and a 10 year warranty.

Keep it on you and you don't have to worry about it getting stolen or someone accidentally walking off with it.
