So far I have completed roughly 60 hours in a hospital, about 20 hours in a nursing home, and 3 years working in a Family Doctors office as a securtary.

I am also involved in Heart & stroke foundation, and other foundations that provide assistance for blind people.

is this the norm?

You've told us nothing - this is a quality over quantity game. I could have done 200 hours in a hospital, but if those are spent washing linens than maybe they aren't so useful.

You need to talk up your experiences and give good descriptions of what you did and what you got out of it. Just saying "I'm involved in X" or "I did ## hours doing Y" just doesn't cut it.

The 3 years as a secretary intrigues me, though.

Hospital - Involved in the Paeds department. I clean toys, and tidy up the play room. I also check on all the patients, and see if they need anything, like video games, etc.

Heart & Stroke - Collect donations from my neighbourhood

Blind Assoication - i am responsible for providing assistance for an 80 year old blind man. I read him books, walk him outside, etc.

agree that this doesn't tell us much. But, I would give your ECs a B-, at best. It looks like you are just checking a few boxes. Where's the commitment?

when you put these into the amcas, write in detail - expressing how they exposed you to medicine, make you more prepared, what you have accomplished, etc. write with enthusiasm instead of being too concise. basically, sell your activities (you did them because you enjoyed them)

In working as a secretary at a doc's office, are you in the back office typing out insurance forms, or at the front desk checking in patients, answering the phone, and taking payment?

How did you interact with nursing home clients?

Haha, how can you not spell the title to the job you've worked for several years?

Who on earth types forms?

Make sure to sell yourself and exaggerate a little in the AMCAS, then you should be fine.

don't do this. spin things for sure, but don't exaggerate-- it's dishonest to report doing more or better things than you actually did.

As long as it's not a downright lie or over-the-top exaggeration, I don't think it's a big deal to exaggerate a little.

oh technicalities. i think jurrasicpark (great movie - they don't make them like the OG version anymore) was maybe commenting on the word choice, you fill in/out forms

hell no, i mean who uses a friggin typewriter? takes too damn long.

insurance companies are just glad we send them in before the 5th request and mostly legible. 😎

I take it you're currently a unit secretary or med office person then? You speak pretty authoritatively about all of this.
I have been known to hold that role.

Whether or not this is a currently accurate assessment I will neither confirm nor deny. :ninja:

In any case. I'm late for my daily flirt-with-an-attending. 'Scuse me, gotta go pull rank.

:roflcopter:

ugh.
How exactly dose a unit secretary 'pull rank' on an attending? Unless you're a nurse in the military pulling rank on a doctor.

Sorry to single you out here, but you post things with a great deal of authority and it's sometimes difficult for me to imagine how you know so much about this stuff already.

Okay, first, "unit secretary" is not an appropriate term for any position I might have held, do currently hold, or might hold.

:eyebrow: As for how I can pull rank, well, I don't know if you're old enough for me to be having that discussion with you...

🤣

that's great, im sure he's banging plenty of nursing students too
I'm not trying to argue with you here, just pointing out an attitude that might cause you to lose a few friends in the future. I wish you the best.

Yes, because implying that someone's partner is a dirty whoring slut is a great way to encourage them to take your advice.

I'm sure that counts.

like I said you can take it or leave it.
It's pretty much common sense that a single guy not looking for a serious relationship is going to get as much ***** he can. Nothing personal, I just wouldn't assume you're the only one..from a health perspective.

Umm.... 'boytoy' was meant to be facetious. As in, a joke. One of my friends calls her fiance "that guy".

We've been together for a while. 🙂

How did you interact with nursing home clients?

I did both.

Here is a brief description:
-Call patients on the phone
-Book appointments
-File Folders
-Organize the place
-Talk to patients (call them up when its their turn or discuss with them anything they need help with)
-Fax referrals to specialiststhat were made by the family doctor
-Type out all the letters the doctor writes for insurance companies, law firms, etc

As for the nursing home, I am in charge of taking care of 2 people around my age that are both disabled. We do many fun activties with them. They like walking outside the nursing home. Sometimes we use the bus to take them to bowling allies(They have this downward slope structure over there.. where all you would need is a slight push for the bowling ball to run down, and head for the pins.

Nothin' special but no one is gonna be.

what's a securtary?

x2

I'm guessing it's a very southern secretary... Dunno though.

OP, you should get involved in some hospital shadowing, research, and some more directly applicable stuff. The "securtary" doesn't seem like much, but I guess it depends on how you spin the job on your applications.

I think you have checked the "volunteer" box with activites that you enjoyed and to which you were committed.

But the research and clinical areas are very weak.
