So far I have completed roughly 60 hours in a hospital, about 20 hours in a nursing home, and 3 years working in a Family Doctors office as a securtary.

I am also involved in Heart & stroke foundation, and other foundations that provide assistance for blind people.

is this the norm?

You've told us nothing - this is a quality over quantity game. I could have done 200 hours in a hospital, but if those are spent washing linens than maybe they aren't so useful.

You need to talk up your experiences and give good descriptions of what you did and what you got out of it. Just saying "I'm involved in X" or "I did ## hours doing Y" just doesn't cut it.

The 3 years as a secretary intrigues me, though.

Hospital - Involved in the Paeds department. I clean toys, and tidy up the play room. I also check on all the patients, and see if they need anything, like video games, etc.

Heart & Stroke - Collect donations from my neighbourhood

Blind Assoication - i am responsible for providing assistance for an 80 year old blind man. I read him books, walk him outside, etc.

when you put these into the amcas, write in detail - expressing how they exposed you to medicine, make you more prepared, what you have accomplished, etc. write with enthusiasm instead of being too concise. basically, sell your activities (you did them because you enjoyed them)

I take it you're currently a unit secretary or med office person then? You speak pretty authoritatively about all of this.

I have been known to hold that role.

Whether or not this is a currently accurate assessment I will neither confirm nor deny.

How exactly dose a unit secretary 'pull rank' on an attending? Unless you're a nurse in the military pulling rank on a doctor.

Sorry to single you out here, but you post things with a great deal of authority and it's sometimes difficult for me to imagine how you know so much about this stuff already.

Okay, first, "unit secretary" is not an appropriate term for any position I might have held, do currently hold, or might hold.

As for how I can pull rank, well, I don't know if you're old enough for me to be having that discussion with you...

-Talk to patients (call them up when its their turn or discuss with them anything they need help with)
-Fax referrals to specialiststhat were made by the family doctor
-Type out all the letters the doctor writes for insurance companies, law firms, etc

As for the nursing home, I am in charge of taking care of 2 people around my age that are both disabled. We do many fun activties with them. They like walking outside the nursing home. Sometimes we use the bus to take them to bowling allies(They have this downward slope structure over there.. where all you would need is a slight push for the bowling ball to run down, and head for the pins.

OP, you should get involved in some hospital shadowing, research, and some more directly applicable stuff. The "securtary" doesn't seem like much, but I guess it depends on how you spin the job on your applications.

I think you have checked the "volunteer" box with activites that you enjoyed and to which you were committed.

But the research and clinical areas are very weak.
