hi all! This is for all you other reapps out there... what did you guys do with your personal statements?

I'm a little torn as to if it is smarter to just rewrite the whole thing or just make edits to my old one. Also is it wise to address the issue of being a reapplicant in the essay? (what we've learned from it, what we've improved on, etc)

ahh need advice! any would help 🙁
thank you all in advance and happy applying! 🙂

I had kind of the same opening because the "story" of how I decided to pursue a future in dentistry is the same as it was back then...

However, since I applied (started my app in November of that cycle) I have shadowed / researched more and I started a masters program.

So, I re-did the bulk of the middle-end. Explaining my increased desire to become a dentist, how i've changed since I applied last (masters/marriage&child), and how my GPA has increased due to that increased desire.

Keep in mind that MOST schools (if you applied last cycle) can see your previous personal statement. And SOME schools can still see it EVEN AFTER FOUR YEARS... UCLA and Western....

haha. GOOD LUCK!

I wouldnt rewrite the whole thing if the first statement was a good one. Just modify it to include up to date information and make your determination known by saying "As a reapplicant I believe my commitment ot dentistry is as strong as ever, in the past year I took class Blah Blah and worked or volunteered at Blah Blah. I believe this further strengthens my application and puts me on the competitive edge of the application process."

Don't want to hi-jack, but a quick question.

What are your sources for this? Just curious

In regards to PS, (I am a re-applicant as well) the general consensus seems to be:

Best: Rewrite new thing
Better: Re-word, with updates
Won't break you but it certainly won't help: Using the exact same one. <-- This might even come off as lazy.

This goes for secondary essays as well. I'd rewrite that completely (I did)

I ended up writing a completely new PS.

I called EACH of the schools I am applying to and asked if they needed all new information from me... and then kind of acted dumb and asked "can you still see my records from when I previously applied?"

UCLA and Western looked it up on their computers and both said "Yeah, it is still in our system, the reviewers will be able to see it when they see your new application."

I thought they could only see stuff from the previous year. 😱
