Is anyone here a re-applicant to MSU and has any recieved interviews? If so what did you change on your application. I am a re-applicant but I have not heard anything since early september.

Also has anyone reapplied and gotten into MSU? If so, what did you do to make yourself a stronger applicant.

i applied and got in to MSU (not reapplicant- currently attend other school). It is very important that you take time and write good essays that convey compassion, empathy, etc, etc, have lots of meaningful clinical experience, and demonstrate interest in their school. Are you interested practicing primary care in rural underserved areas? MSU wants students who want to do this. If this is true for you, make sure you convey this in your interview. You may want to try calling them to check on the status of your application (it is still early, so don't fret). You could also write a letter of interest detailing why you want to go to MSU (pick 3-4 specific points, keep it less than 1 page).

If you did not get in there the first time, than that should be a sign that you need to change something in your application- whether it is your MCAT, GPA, clinical experience, essays, etc (research is not so important to them, but it is looked upon favorably). At the end of each interview season you can make an appointment with the dean at MSU and she will sit down and talk with you on how you can improve your application (a friend of mine did this and it worked- he did not interview well and that was his only problem).

Good Luck.

Hi there, I'm MS1 at MSU (CHM) and we have already been through three rounds of interviews. But I wouldn't be concerned about the timing of your interview--I interviewed in late April of this year. When it does come time for your interview, its really low stress. You will have a student interviewer, someone from my class and a faculty interview. You don't have to "sell" yourself on any grounds ie. primary care etc. But just be yourself. The first year class people are in general very laid back--just enjoy yourself on the interview. Let me know when you do get your interview--i'm probably know who you'll intervew with. 🙂 Good luck!

fun8stuff - can you elaborate just a little on how your friend didn't interview well? most people have said that CHM's interview is very low stress and just to be yourself (krisco99, your thoughts would be very much appreciated too)... was it because he didn't have at least a general idea of the major points he wanted to get across? not prepared for some of the questions? i'm a 3 time re-applicant, but i did not previously apply to CHM... this whole application process is so painful and i want to make sure that things go better this time around. my interview is coming up soon so any advice would be great! thanks!

Yes, I am a reapplicant-I'm currently attending school at MSUCHM. I think the main thing I did wrong two years ago was to submit my application too late, because when I reapplied-it was with essentially the same application-although I did rewrite my personal statement a little.

But, if you don't get accepted this year-schedule an appointment with Dr. Christine Shafer-she's the assistant dean of admissions. She was really great. I know several people who reapplied and got in this time around. If you let them know you are really interested in attending their school I think it shows them that you are serious and they are more likely to extend an invitation to attend...plus it puts a face on your application. I think it really cemented a better chance of getting accepted.

For your interview-know the motto of CHM-(the qualities of a good physician-posted on their website-something like competence, respect for others, compassion, proffessional and social responsibilty-I may have missed one here, but I can't remember 😳 ...Make sure you look at the interview postings on SDN-I myself am interviewing applicants this year-so take that advice.
Also, whatever they ask-remember they are looking to see how much deep thought you have put into the issues. THe interviews are really laid back however, so best of luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

My friend is a real nice guy deep down... but some times he can come off as cocky and overconfident. I think he assumed that he was a sure shot because he had good grades and test scores (but I really don't know for sure). It is just his personality. Honestly, from reading your posts on here you do not seem like you have this type of personality, so I wouldn't be worried. Just be yourself in the interview. I am normally on the quiet side, but during the interview I let me emotion come out about how badly I wanted to be a physician and help people. It was not over-bearing, but I think it helped. I had like 5-6 practice interviews with people around my campus because I was afraid I would be too quiet.

The interview is very low stress. You have nothing to worry about. Be yourself and be truthful with your answers. Think before you speak. It's okay to pause for 10 seconds to gather your thoughts. Look them in the eye and let them know how bad you want to go to MSU. MSU is a great school and you have to make them know how bad you want to go to MSU. Things I emphasized in my interview is that I wanted to do primary care, help out in underserved areas, loved msu because of the friendliness, and the atmosphere. Most msu students seem happy. PM some msu students on here and ask them what they love about MSU (i did this for each school i applied to & interviewed at). Go to their website. They have tons of stuff stating what you need to do to be accepted. I made lists for each of my schools and memorized that highpoints before the interviews.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me... but it may be best to talk to current MSU students. Good Luck!

Good
