Hi, I am re-applying for the first time this coming application cycle. I really feel that I am a strong candidate with high GPA, many EC and LOR and the only factor that affected my application was being late. Should I still re-write my personal statement?

I would tweak it, and possibly add anything new that may have occurred during this period.

Read it yourself as objectively as possible and see if maybe there is something that you see that could be edited or possibly added.

I was in that same boat As you last year. Please write new personal statement and incorprate any new experiances u might have had this year and u need to show maturity, and how u have changed. If possible, replacing any LORs with new ones from this year might be a good idea as well. I would advise not to be over confident with your credentials but to improve upon them so when the time comes you will have a lot to talk about in ur interviews and they will know u r serious about this career. Instead of assuming its because you're late, assume its because you didn't sell yourself well enough and start from there. In the end, the time you spend won't be as much as if you don't get in next year.

Even if it is infact because you were late, you can use the extra time you have to rewrite your personal statement and improve other parts of your candidacy. I remember reading the NYMC dean said their admissions took an identical personal statement from the previous year as a sign of laziness.

I know alot has been made of being late hurts you on these boards but even with the rolling admissions, from my experience this isn't true for every school.

I applied January/Febuary to 10 schools, I'm a flawed candidate (don't want to go into details on a public forum), and I didn't have any problems other than waiting till April/May for decisions. 5 interviews, 3 acceptances, 1 WL (accepted early this month), and an rejection from my first interview when I went in thinking I was overqualified and interviewing there just because I applied late (I'm not being glib.)

Yes, unless you apply to totally different schools that won't remember you from last season. You shouldn't just assume that the only thing holding you back was being late, that's a disaster waiting to happen.

When you re-apply, they will want to know how you improved as a candidate for medical school, and you can't say, 'my improvement is that I turned in my application earlier' (you obviously won't say that, but you know what I mean). Get new letters, show how you improved in your PS, how you matured, how you learned, etc.

Also, don't be too confident to apply to lower-tier schools, the last thing you want is to be is left out in the cold, wishing you had an acceptance from the lowest ranking school.
