Hello Everyone,

I am a pre-optometry junior in university. I am very worried about my grades thus far and would really appreciate it if those who can (i.e. those who got accepted or have experience), can give me advice on ways to improve my GPA. Also, what are my chances of getting accepted into Optometry School as of now.

***NOTE: I still have a few more science courses to take. Any advice on how to study/ace BIO and ORGO courses are much appreciated!

My grades are the following:
1- GEN CHM (took it twice): WP & C
2- PHY 1 (took it twice): D+ & B+
3- PHY 2: B-
4- GEN CHM LAB (took it twice): WP & B
5- CALC: D
6- PHY 1 LAB: A
7- PHY 2 LAB: B

If you can't manage to get A's and B's in every pre-req science course then you may want to reconsider any kind of medical program. All medical programs are science-heavy and intensive and if you can't handle undergrad courses then there is no way you can handle graduate-level science classes.

You know if you do really well in your remaining coursework, I think you still have a pretty good chance. I re-took a couple courses, too, to bump up my grades. But you still do need to do really well in your upcoming bio and organic classes. I mean, advice for that is pretty much what you'd expect. Work hard, seek out learning resources, get tutoring if you need it, make sure you know how you learn best. There is truth to what the person above me posted, optometry school is hard, so you need to be ready.

You set yourself for an uphill battle, need to do even better than everyone just so your gpa can match theirs. More pressure is on your OAT too... and optometry schooling will be hard if you dont fix your studying habit. If you have the interest and devotion, you can make it. If you dont then I honestly suggest you switch to another degree or take a year off so that you can find what you want to do without harming you GPA any further. Best of luck, one step at a time!

I think with any field it's important to not be discouraged by your past and just try and do better in the future. I don't think optometry is very competitive at all you should get in somewhere. PinkCupcake's statement is pretty extreme.

I dont think you need A's and B's in all your prereqs either but if you are retaking courses you want to prove that given another chance you can do well so you should be working really hard to get those A's the second time around! Another thing to consider is that when you took these classes (ie. at the beg of your degree vs near the end) will also make a difference. If you did take them near the end I would suggest doing some higher level courses to upgrade the lower grades or preparing for those particular sections on the OAT really well to show that you have taken the time to learn your stuff! (Chads Videos!!!!). That's the road I would take!
