Hey,
I am new to this forum and just recently created an account ( yesterday) after reading on this forum for month's ever since I realistically wanted to become a doctor. I was hoping to get some greatly appreciated advice honest opinions.
I went to a state college my freshman year with the idea of business as my major. I transferred to the nearby University the year after to make my parents happy and took pre-medical courses because they always wanted me to be a doctor. I agreed to take all the pre-med requirements because even if I wanted to become a Physical Therapist I needed those classes, obviously with lower requirements. Initially with a lack of motivation I did extremely poorly my in all the pre med requirements. I received pretty much C's across the board with a D in Cell Bio which I retook and got a B- in and a B in Orgo 1. I didn't have great grades in my other classes either. Please keep reading tho lol.
I was in terrible position going into the summer of my senior year ( junior year at the university.) That's when after working at a psychiatrist's office all summer and a lot of maturing due to personal reasons I decided to give a last ditch effort to doing what I really wanted at that point, becoming a doctor. I took Evolutionary bio over the summer, the only pre med requirement I never took before, and received an A. Now the policy at my school is you can't retake most classes other than in the summer so I was forced to just finish my new psychology major requirements. I got a 3.78 gpa that fall semester with 16 credits of which most were pretty easy psych classes. Then this current spring semester I'm finishing up all my requirements and taking a language class expecting a 4.0 or maybe a little below because of an A-. I will also be taking the MCAT's while trying to maintain this 4.0 and although I'm not taking any courses for it, I expect a high 20's grade at the bare minimum but hopefully I'll hit the 30 mark. I will also be taking biochem and retaking one of my chem classes over the summer to improve my science GPA before either graduating or staying one more fall semester.
I've checked my school GPA which should be a 3.3 overall and a 2.9 science. So I was confident in the fact I would apply to some Post bac programs and get in and hopefully after doing well in those apply to MD and DO schools. But I recently went on to check my AMCAS GPA and after realizing retakes aren't that helpful and my transfer school from freshman year grades will count. My overall GPA may only be a 2.95 and Bcpm gpa bit lower.
My question is Do I even have any chance at Post bac programs. Should I even consider American MD or DO or just move on to Caribbean medical schools as a last resort? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
