Sorry to bother you people 🙂 But I really need help with my high school grades.

I am a sophomore, 15 in high school. I really want to be a pediatrician in my life but I have been getting really really bad grades in high school. I am somehow extremely lazy to the point where I can't control it. I have failed a class or two but my last average was 69! 🙁 Please someone help me how I can get better grades and how I can get the motivation to listen in class. I hardly listen in class and get distracted so easily.

In my history class, when there was a midterm coming up, I ended up spending a whole day studying and relearning the whole curriculum to where we are and passed the exam. Somehow when I am told the teacher will fail me if I fail that exam I suddenly get the motivation but how can I always have this motivation?

How can I motivate myself to study, do all homework, and do much better, or pay attention at all times in class?

Thanks.

It sounds like you don't pay attention in class, and can't get motivated with homework until you are under pressure.

Talk to people at school. More than one. Talk to your guidance counselor, your favorite teacher, school psychologist. Noone on the SDN can observe you and figure out where the problem is. It might be in the classroom, or with your homework, or with your actual goals... lots of things.

Bottom line is, you sound like you need help. The only way to get that is to ask for it from the people who can really help you. And again, talk to more than one person, so they can talk to each other and figure out how to help you.

If you don't have a learning disability (which I would check for, A.D.D., A.D.H.D., etc...) then you just need to learn discipline. This could definitely be a situation where you could use help from a guidance counselor, that is what they are there for, to help the students. You also need to understand that if you don't do well in high school, it only gets harder as you get further. I have had a lot of trouble with classes I don't really enjoy, but I have had to learn discipline so I can make it through those classes to get to the classes I enjoy. Medical school is EXTREMELY competitive and only the ones who really WANT it are going to get in, and those who WANT it develop good habits and work hard to get (which may be a hard concept for a teenager to grasp 😉). I had to develop good study habits and work hard, but I made it and I am entering a DPT program in May. You can do it, you just have to push yourself!

Good luck! 🙂

Yeah ruling out the possibility that you have a learning disability, it's most likely going to take some lifestyle changes to develop a more disciplined approach with studying. You'll just have to do whatever you can to stay on top of your work, like more organization or study time. You might have to spend less time with friends at first or get more sleep. Once you get into the grove you'll enjoy the rewards of your effort and it'll become a lot easier 😉

On the homework front, I recommend getting in the habit of doing your homework right when you get home from school and not doing any other activities until it is finished unless it is a required family activity like dinner or whatever.

I was watching MTV True Life where the high school/college students were taking adderall so they can focus "ALOT" more during class and then when they go study the drugs help them focus on what they need to do (pill substance). I dont recommend this but results are results! my advice to you is to read your book (highlight main points in the book and notes to help study faster), take down all notes on the board (I do this so i dont have to listen to whole lectures), and do prac problems over and over so i can prepare what a test can throw at me.

mmmm im a distracted person too. i make up for what i didnt learn by studying at home. i tell you what to do: Find interest in what they are teaching and it will come to you. If you tell yourself the subject is boring then hell, itll be boring. Ive developed the mentality so this isnt much of a problem. Still wish i wasnt so distracted, jaja you see its not only in learning that i get distracted in.
