I found out a few weeks ago that I failed Step I by three points 😳 I am now taking a 6 week rotation off to study and retake step I. My biggest concern is that I want to do a general surgery residency and now I feel like that may not be an option. My grades are decent and so far my clinicals have been great. What would be the best way to go as far as trying to get a surgery residency. I plan to do some audition rotations next year and take step 2 before I interview. Any other thoughts? Thanks 😕

People say you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. General surgery residencies have openings each year and people even scramble in to them. You're best bet, as with just about any residency process, is to meet and get to know the people who make the decisions at your school. Good words from colleagues at other schools always carry weight. Remember that Step 1 was designed to be pass/fail because it does not necessarily correlate to being a good doctor in the clinics- which sounds like you are. Good luck and don't give up your dreams because of one exam score!

General Surgery is not THAT competitive IMHO. Do well on your away rotations, apply widely and rank A LOT of programs. Your school's residency director can help you identify what programs would be your best bet.

I would pay very little attention to the drivel and idiocy that is repeatedly posted on this site. Last year there were 2 unfilled categorical positions in the entire country.

exactly. anyone who tells you general surgery is an easy match is an idiot. nonetheless, it might happen if the rest of your application is good. needless to say, you need to ace step 1 on the retake. just passing won't be impressive.

"so far my clinicals have been great" --honoring medicine and of course surgery are the most important things.
