I am about to graduate from a Master of Science program at a top university. I have done lab research here and have a 3.5 gpa. Activities and experiences aside, I am wondering if I would even have a chance based on just my college grades and my graduate grades. I went to my state college and did very poorly. I ended up with a 2.8 gpa. A bunch of C's in science classes and had to repeat Physics II & Orgo II. Even when I did, I still got a C or C+. I think I would do a lot better in these classes now because I am more mature and focused. I suffered from depression for many years and honestly probably lazy. I don't know what my next move should be. I'm going to be getting a job soon so I'm wondering if I should take some undergrad science classes to boost the gpa at least to a 3.0 and then take the MCAT and see how it goes. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I'd suggest you consider aiming at DO medical schools, as their application service will take only the most recent retake of a course to figure your application GPA, so if you can get As in those courses as you predict, your GPA will rise much faster. They also include the grad school GPA, which the MD application service will not.

You've shown that you can handle advance course work by doing a master's program. Get a good MCAT (30+), write up your application well, and prep for being asked about undergrad at interviews. Where you decide to apply will determine how competitive you are. If you want an MD, then don't settle for DO. If you just want to practice medicine, then maybe apply to DO schools as well. Just don't settle.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate the encouragement. I think the best thing for me would probably to take a MCAT prep course and really work for it!!

I imagine it is not too difficult for a DO to get a residency in Internal Medicine. Is this correct? Does anyone have any idea about competitiveness of ID fellowships for DOs?
