I am an MSIV who is starting my Sub I in medicine and I absolutely need a LOR out of this rotation to apply for residency. The way I see it my LOR can either come from the attending whom I work directly with on the team or the clerkship director whom I might or might not have much face time with but she is the person who will sees all my evals and writes my final eval for the rotation.

The thing is this week I have a very nice attending but starting next week we will have a new attending who is known to be strict on students and there is a good chance I won't impress him enough for a strong LOR. He will probably be on service for 2 wks which is half the time of my rotation and another one will be on for the last wk.

My question is if it is bad to ask somebody who only works with you for 1 wk for a LOR? I always try to ask whomever I have the most time with and seems to be happy with my performance but in this case it will be difficult. Should I ask the clerkship director instead on the grounds that she will be able to gauge my level by all the evals throughout the rotation even I might not have much face time with her? I just feel skeptical about asking the strict attending for a LOR unless I somehow manage to impress him enough which I doubt. Please give me your advice. Thank you very much.
