Since I graduated college over 10 years ago and had to retake a few pre-reqs due to some dental school's statute of limitations, I only had a handful of recent science profs I could choose from to ask for a LOR. One of them I had for two different classes and got the highest grade in both classes, and the prof said he'd be happy to write a LOR for me back in March.

I opened Interfolio just for this Prof because I know he can get busy and maybe procrastinate. Since then, I have sent him reminder emails about it. Three weeks ago, after finals, I called him about something else and he brought up the letter and the deadline and he said he'd get it in a few days.

After a week, I sent him a follow up email attaching my personal statement for his reference (this was the week before the application opened).

After hearing no response the day the application opened, I called him and he said he never got the email. I re-emailed my PS to him while we were on the phone and he said he got it. That day, he said he'd get it in the "next day or so."

Two days later, I went to his office and he told me he really wants to write one but things have been crazy with the beginning of the summer semester (to give him credit, he looked busy; students and professors were swarming his office with various questions and issues) and he was still working on it. I asked him if it would help if I wrote a letter for him based on some things that we discussed that he can edit and work with, and he was very enthusiastic and said he would love that (I think for him, the "momentum" to start the letter was lacking and I felt that it would help).

I sent him the letter attached to an email after that, last week, and reiterated that I appreciate his help but at this point, any delay can really put me at a disadvantage.

Still no response! What should I do! I am getting so irritated and upset since I spent so much time and effort ensuring that I get all my app stuff in early.

I know I can ask another professor but I feel bad asking for something from someone else this late in the game. I was thinking of going back to his office tomorrow, waiting until he is absolutely free, and suggesting he uploads it while I am there?

don't feel discouraged... its still early June lol....

Show up to his office hours again, explain to him that the AADSAS application cycle is time-limited (aka early applicants = better). Let him feel sorry for you, REMAIN POLITE, and simply see if he can do it for you today so you can "submit everything". Let him feel that his LOR is holding everything off for you (again, SAY IT POLITELY).

Another thing you can do is to contact another professor (this is your backup LOR), just incase the previous guy never writes you one.

Ugh, I feel for you. Some of my profs took MONTHS to write and submit my LORs. Just keep poitely bugging them (e.g reminding them that the "deadline" to submit the LOR is approaching and you appreciate their support and their time). If they agreed to write you a recommendation, they'll get it done.

Take a breath and relax. My application wasn't complete until August and everything was fine for me. That said, I did have a professor that essentially disappeared on me, and her letter probably would have been the best one because she knew me very well. I had to scramble around last minute to fill in the void she left, but it still worked out. Just stay on top of it without coming off as desperate or annoying to the professor, and create options for yourself by starting to look into other letter writers in case this one doesn't work out.

I can relate. My dentist didn't get his letter in until the end of September! Luckily, the school I was accepted to only required three letters so I was offered an interview before his letter was even in.

Just stay on him. I would go in person as much as possible if you can. It is harder to ignore you standing in his doorway. Don't worry too much, it is still very early in the cycle.

Good luck!

I'm really losing faith in this professor. He is the chair of the department.. The only other profs I have that I can use are both adjunct professors that taught me for my lab. Would lab professors count as "science" professors?

One of my professors from this past semester is going to write me a LOR. However, I will not be applying to DS until next summer. What do I do with the letter in the meantime? Do I just have him email me a copy of it? Do I have him upload it to interfolio? Can I even get an interfolio account if I'm not applying for another year?

I would ask another professor asap. Last cycle I had a science prof do the same, even sat me down to interview me about ethics and the field. By November he had not sent the letter even after constant reminders. Luckily sent out an email to others stating how my application was "pending one final LOR" and a diff professor agreed to write one. So frustrating so def look make sure you have another choice.

I'm in a similar situation 🙁 It sounds like he really wants to write the letter for you, so don't give up just yet. It wouldn't be a bad idea to scope out some backups though. Just keep sending him some sort of weekly reminder asking how the letter is coming along and if there is anything else he needs etc etc. Good luck!

Honestly, people on SDN freak you out more than you need to. The cycle JUST opened. AADSAS has probably not even processed the first batch yet...If your letter gets there by the end of June, you are still ok! Heck, even July is EARLY.

With that said, seems like the professor really wants to write you one, so keep following up with him/her politely. Also email another professor as a backup because you never know!

Update: I'm so relieved! He submitted the letter after I dropped by his office this morning! Thanks for all of your support on here. I might have over-reacted a little, but I'm sure many of you are "Type A" personalities like myself, who want to get the app in as early as possible!

That's awesome!! Glad it worked out for you!
