Hey SDN, I’m new here and could use some help:

  1. cGPA - 3.34, sGPA - 3.14 (Mech Eng. major)
  2. MCAT - 507, 125/129/124/129
  3. Texas resident
  4. Hispanic/White
  5. State school in Texas for undergrad
  6. Clinic experience - ~3000 hours as a paid scribe and now MA over the past 2.5 years
  7. Research - senior design project for engineering
  8. Shadowing - 20 hours shadowing an internist
  9. Non-clinical volunteering - ~150 hours over the past 4 years through fraternity and two non-profits
  10. Other extracurricular activities - former Big 12 athlete and was on SAAC board, private coach for my sport for the past 5 years, been involved with local running club for a year now

I applied this year (EY2020) to all Texas schools minus Baylor and I also applied to UIWSOM and RVUCOM (very, very late). My TMDSAS secondaries were all done in June. I got one II to an MD and was rejected. I know my GPA is low (did not like engineering). I applied and was accepted to the UNTHSC M.S. in Medical Sciences program that will start this summer and is 1 year and I am also waiting to hear back on the TTU GMS program which is 2 years. I am still working as an MA through everything that is going on and will keep volunteering/shadowing when possible. I am currently rewriting my PS and will do the same for essays.

I am trying to decide if it is worth it to apply again this year (in May/June) while I do the UNT program, especially since I already have an MCAT score, or if I would have a better chance getting an acceptance after the 2 year TTU program. UNT also offers the program online now which is enticing given the current pandemic landscape but are online courses viewed negatively by adcoms?

I plan to apply TMDSAS again as well as these schools:

  • TCU/UNT
  • Baylor - I know it's wildly unlikely but it can’t hurt to try right?
  • Univ. of Arizona
  • Rush
  • Tulane
  • Loma Linda
  • Sam Houston
  • UIWSOM
  • RVUCOM
  • AZCOM
  • OSUCOM
  • PCOM

I know that as a Texas resident my chances of OOS are probably slim, is there any reason to apply to any other OOS MD programs? I went through MSAR and looked at stats but don’t know how applicable that is as a Texas resident. Are there any other DO schools I should add to this list?

Sorry that was a lot, thanks for reading!

The 1-year program at UNTHSC has a very good track record of improving an applicant's chances at admission to med school. It is a full-time endeavor and you will not be able to carry on working while you attend (though you can work up until it starts).
Giving it all your effort and coming out of it proving that you can handle the academic course load and subject matter is the main point of spending this year at UNT. Trying to apply again right now (before you even start the program) will not give you the benefit of this year of proving yourself, and would be just like re-applying with your last year's stats.
I would recommend you re-apply in 2021-2022 application season. Your MCAT score will still be valid for TX schools, and maybe you will be retaking it as part of your UNT year for an even better score.

I agree with Wysdoc in waiting until the 2021-2022 cycle to apply.

I have a similar app to yours but with a higher GPA and a slightly higher MCAT and applied two cycles in a row. Also URM, TX resident, 3 years of scribe experience, etc. Received several TX MD invites both cycles but have nothing to show for it after not matching, yet again. However, I applied DO this cycle as well and received invites from many schools and was accepted to my top DO program.

I think if you do well in the UNTHSC program, you have a good chance of getting in to a TX MD. However, it won't hurt to apply to some OOS DO schools just in case.

The median accepted GPA for 8 of the 11 MD schools in TX is 3.82+ (UTRGV is 3.6x. Unsure on TCU/UNT and UHCOM), so it's going to be hard to get in with a 3.34/3.14, even as an URM. I have a 3.6x and was told in an interview that it was low for their school. Shoot for a 3.8+ at the UNT program.
