I just posted this on reddit so I will drop this bad boy here 😛
Currently sitting on the waitlist on a T10 but I think having too much hope led me to being sort of unprepared for a reapp. I will attach my original application details:
Research: ~1300 hours from almost two years undergraduate research. Did a symposium poster and SURF program with the same PI but I have no recommendation from him due to an inappropriate situation and my dedication being shakey.
Clinical: 150 hours in a TBI treatment facility. I kind of made negative comments about the quality of care in my personal statement which I now understand was a huge mistake and no-no in general of application.
Volunteering: just over 200 hours of YMCA meals on wheels and animal shelter stuff (not the best I know this was iffy and mostly animal shelter tbh ymca was short lived)
Shadowing: OR Neurosurgery about 60 hours or so.
TA/Leadership: OCHEM and Biochemistry TA for a year, not very involved in my school's extracurriculars but I managed and was lead singer for my band for almost two or three years (managing finances, organizing shows, creating posters, managing social media, coordinating rehearsals, basically like a part-time job)
I also worked all through undergrad at a dining hall and was a pell grant recipient. This is kind of why my volunteer hours are so low.
New additions to my application
More hours for the band management: We opened for A Boogie wit da hoodie at my college and played for almost two thousand people which was huge. We've done a number of charity shows and I am basically solely responsible for everything we do lulz (communicating with bands and orgs, getting shows, social media, money management, writing songs, organizing setlists) my drummer's mom is somewhat associated with adcoms and she told me to really expound on this detail because she thinks it's really unique and demonstrative of a lot of skills and dedication (let me know what y'all think!)
Clinical: 350 hours of Patient Safety Attendant (sitter position basically sitting with confused or physically disabled or SI patient for 12 hours so I see all their primary care and do A LOT of interacting and fielding with their family and connecting etc etc)
Research: Full-time research tech since september 😛 (no pubs but I have started several of my own projects and spearheaded our lab's efforts to characterize RNA-sequencing data which I had to learn how to do from scratch)
Volunteering: Did women's center stuff but I had trouble communicating with them and sent a bunch of follow-ups blah blah blah but I basically have about 60 hours through that. Habitat for humanity more recently started in february and i have just shy of 100 hours and I really like doing it because I'm interacting with community members and I am in Appalachia and I have been reading more books about the area and the struggles they've had and just I am really passionate about giving back to this community in general.
Shadowing: nothing new lulz! but my hospital experience gives me a lot of observation of providers
sorry this was a long post I had too much espresso concentrate and I am kind of rambling here's the updated totals:
Clinical: ~500 hours paid
Research: probably 3000 hours but no pubs (poster presentation though yay lol)
Volunteering: Not counting the animal shelter stuff I would say probably around 200 now
Band thing: close to 1000 hours if not more tbh
My questions are: 1. Is it ok to really lean in to the band thing? I have been told it's really impressive and I should go into detail because I can really motivate and excite crowds and get them interacting and form connections etc etc. 2. Is it ok that I have no publications 💔 3. How should I be framing my application? 4. idk any feedback yassss
Oh also hard stats:
MCAT: 131 129 130 130 (520)
virginia resident ORM (i think)
GPA: cGPA 3.7 sGPA 3.69 basically the same i didn't take anything but stem
let me know if i am missing anything 😀
