How many schools did you apply to? Did you apply really late last cycle? Are you an international student? Maybe broaden your range to 10-15 schools this cycle. Your DAT's are solid. Maybe your BCP is hindering your app, but Im sure after doing well in your masters it will show you're capable of handling the D-school workload. Your score on the MCAT is meaningless to D-school adcoms. Any mention of the MCAT in your personal statement or on AADSAS app could've raised red flags idk. Maybe more members will chime in on this post. If you want this badly enough, then you will obtain it, keep your head up 👍I welcome the cynics, pessimists, realists, and the flat out jerks.
I applied last cycle with a 3.03 gpa (2.67 bcp) and a 21 AA / 20 TS (20,22,18) / 21 RC / 24 QR
I have over 800 hours of shadowing experience, most of which come from shadowing my dad at his practice, but this also includes over 100 total hours from 2 other dentists.
I have research experience in metazoan embryology, specifically attempting to dileneate the genetic factors responsible for the diverging characteristics in zebra fish and black tetra fish given their identical juvenile phenotypes.
I was vice president of my fraternity, student council rep, first year resident advisor, volunteer at hospital, etc.
I got a 39 on MCAT and teach all pre health entrance exams (MCAT, DAT, OAT, PCAT) for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions.
Pretty much it - other smaller things, but nothing too serious..
I didn't get any interviews, so I enrolled in a two year master's program for microbiology. I currently have a 4.0 gpa after completing 19/30 credits needed to graduate. I will finish the program after this fall semester, one year early. Will the new master's gpa help with my original score? Or should I retake the DAT? My thoughts were to wait until end of October.. If no interviews by then, maybe retake? I don't know what else to do. I really want to be a dentist, but I don't know what else to do to show I'm ready.
Suggestions?

haha you sound a LOT like me in every aspect, except I've never taken the MCATs and without 700 extra hours in a parent's office.
...
But yeah, I feel the same way...the only thing I could do at this point is take the DATs again, but am otherwise tapped out. Luck of the draw...

And then people say the DAT is a cake compared to the MCAT.
The DAT is a totally different test, and it is a lot easier for most people. The MCAT is huge on reasoning and analytical skills (Bio and PS; Verbal is like LSAT-lite). The DAT on the other hand, mainly requires you to memorize and regurgitate a lot of info (TS, QR), read really fast (RC) and have good visuospatial ability (PAT).
The DAT requires a lot of time to prepare for but the nature of the exam makes it easier for most people. People can commit a lot of time to study and grind their way to stellar scores. The MCAT is more of an IQ test; you have to be innately intelligent to do well. Most people will do better on the DAT.
OP- your high MCAT, lower (but still excellent) DAT, and low gpa makes me think you're brilliant but weren't focused enough on your schoolwork.
I'm guessing you got a 24+ as well then? What schools are you applying to? Have you gotten any interviews yet?

Doc is an equal opportunist. He does this to everyone. Wear a cup if you're a dude while reading his posts.I guess not. I tried managing my expectations. I will finish the M by December. Do you have suggestions for what I can do from Jan to Jun in 2013? Is undergraduate underachievement unsalvagable? I guess I'm looking for potential alternative solutions more than im looking for your condescension. Although I do appreciate your time, so thank you in advance for your help.
Except me!Haha man, I'm trying! I got doc toothache kicking me in my cyber nuts, other sdn'ers dwarfing all my stats, seeing everyone else get interviews.. Damn headache, I tell you.
Fortunately, I found an effective panacea in drinking + boating for the problems created by sample bias. Thanks to everyone for the good advice and help. best of luck to everyone. Cheers👍

Awww, you need to cheer up! I see your sadness on so many threads and it is making me sad too. :-(Except me!![]()
i'm happy. i've been drinking on the boat in northern michigan this whole week lol. i really can't complain. Charlevoix, Michigan is the place to be for vacation, if anyone is looking to get away for a bit
that being said, if i don't get any interviews, then i'm going to restudy from jan to june in 2013, take the dat again, get the 24+, and reapply with the 4.0 in the masters.
That will do it for you! Your MCAT score is awesome but unfortunately it will do nothing but hurt you if you bring it up during dental school interviews. I have confidence with all your tutoring you will rock the DAT, add in your masters degree and schools will be fighting for you. 😎
