I went through a semester of optometry school in fall 2024, and I ended up having to withdraw for mental and physical health reasons. I reapplied to a few schools for the 2025 cycle, and I was very hopeful about being accepted somewhere, but I ended up being rejected. I’m feeling really discouraged since most schools seemed to say that the rejections were based off of my undergraduate GPA and OAT scores which I thought were pretty decent and got me accepted into all the schools I applied to last year. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do when I reapply again and how I can stay mentally prepared for optometry school since that is my ultimate goal?

Hello, and I'm sorry to hear.

Did you withdraw from optometry school on medical leave? Did you leave the school in good standing? No optometry schools want to poach a currently enrolled student or one taking medical leave, so I don't know if you were dismissed in good standing. Are you on good terms with the student services director/staff at your old optometry program? Did you pass all of your classes?

You also are thinking about applying to medical school, right? You have to disclose you had matriculated to an optometry program and include your grades. If it is found later that you misrepresented your graduate education (which may be discovered when they run reports for your eligibility for financial aid/FAFSA), any med school offer you receive may be revoked.
