I would recommend including the research position on AMCAS as AMCAS will let you project future hours on the app. You can send an update-letter if your work happens to be published during the application cycle or you present it at a conference. The activity will likely do more good for you on the app than in an update letter.Hi there, non- trad student with bachelors in nursing and cumulative GPA 3.78 with BCPM 3.91 to include post-bacc science pre-med pre-reqs. Initial MCAT 505 then increased to 510 3 months later. 7 years of clinical experience as a nurse in acute inpatient. Spent that 7 years always holding a second job and gaining experience in acute care, urgent care, long term, rehab, and outpatient with 1 year as a CNA prior to that. Volunteering for years at health fairs and an under-served free community clinic as well as participating in a global health trip. Leadership experience with chairing 2 shared decision making councils at the hospital I work at, time as a charge RN, and inducted in a leadership society. Being a non-trad student I haven't had much time for research and my professor LOR's are from nursing school. Strong professional and volunteering LOR. Applied to ~16 schools and received 2 interviews with one being in-state (CO) and one out of state (CA). Waitlisted at the CA school and rejected from CO post II.
I have been offered a research nursing position I will be accepting to boost my application for next cycle though I likely wont start the actual research for about a month or two post training. Both schools previously put a large emphasis on research. Any school recommendations for my reapplication? Should I add the research position to my initial AMCAS application or send it as an update once I am past training? Thank you!
As far as school list is concerned, you should continue to apply to your state schools but 16 total is on the lower side for a 3.8/510 but not completely unreasonable. Apply to everything in CO and use the MSAR to look for schools whose percentage of OOS matriculants is >20%. WARS will also bring up suggestions for you.
Your clinical experience is obviously beyond sufficient, but the low first-time MCAT and short school list probably prevented you from receiving more interviews. Hopefully things will be better this time around with a broader list. Consider including a few choice DO schools as well.
