Long story short: After successfully completing my intern year in IM I left my residency due to personal issues (health and family). After leaving I've tried to find a PGY2 position but was unsuccessful. In my state I can obtain a license and practice in certain areas w/o the benefit of the residency making decent money (about $150K) or do locum tenens work. I am thinking if to reapply now for residency (perhaps psych) or if to forget about it all and just work. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Btw, I'm 44 and estimate by the time I'm done with residency I'll be near 50.

Just some thoughts:

1) Maybe you can find more success if you're open to starting all over again as a PGY1 in IM or FM or whatever?

2) Also you could be finished by age 47 if you do a 3 year residency (no fellowships). That's still close to 20 years of work. Not bad.

3) If health and family are issues, then a 3 year residency in something like FM could be ok for lifestyle balance.

4) I presume it would give you more options as to where you can work etc if you actually complete a residency too.

There's alot that goes into this question that aren't mentioned here.

1. Medical School you graduated from.
2. Date of graduation.
3. Date you completed your PGY1 year.
4. Are the personal issues resolved?
5. Have you talked with your old program if they will take you back?
