Hi guys,

So i see alot of thread asking for advice on their stats so i figure I give it a go to since I can't sleep anyways.

My GPA is 3.85 in undergraduate pharmacology, which isnt like pharmacy it's just like your biochemistry but with focus on pharmacology during senior year. Sorry, just needed to explain cause I had to do it alot with my peers.

My MCAT score is a 30Q, with 11bs, 10ps and 9v. Gonna retake it in a month.

Did research in a anesthesiology lab for 2 years. Got a research fellowship for one summer. In a few honor society if that counts for anything at all. Shadowed my lab PI during the summer in the OR.

Very little patient interaction. Worked in the hospital before but it was clerical work.

Applied last year already and interview for 3 schools. One ended with rejection, the other two I am currently still wait listed for. The interview seemed to have gone well or so I believed.

So I'm just wondering if you can offer any advice as to what I should do for this year off. Also what you think was the reason I was rejected. As far as I can tell it's probably the lack of patient interaction or the mediocre MCAT score.

The schools I interviewed for were Upstate, downstate and Hofstra. I applied only for New York schools.

i think most people will tell you that you have fairly competitive stats, but they will also tell you that you need to apply more broadly (you have to apply out of state). i'd shoot for around 20 schools? maybe work on your ECs this year so you can send in a letter update midseason.

also, if you REALLY want to get in this cycle and don't care where you get in you could try for schools that have low MCAT/GPA averages. i won't name any, but pick up an MSAR for $20 or whatever and take a look.

I hope you do get in, but if you don't, call the schools that interviewed you and ask what improvements you can make for next year.

What was your BCMP GPA? Leadership?

Thanks guy for the advice so far. I think Ill apply a bit more broadly this year but I think Im still gonna try to stay within the tristate area.

As far as leadership goes..umm..zero. heh. I know it's bad, I guess I just didn't see the value of it till this year and kind late now that I graduated.

Also whats bcmp? is that the basic science? if it is then

Basic Bio-A-/A
Biolab- B/A
Organic A-/A-
Organic lab A
Gen chem- B+/A
Gen chem lab A/A
Physics/physic lab A/A-
Calc- A-
Stat- A

Umm other stuff like physio, upper division bio, pharmacology and their labs all As.

Call you admissions committee and ask about what parts your app could have improved. I'd guess maybe it was your interview?? or perhaps LORS

Yea I think Ill do that.

So I've been thinking what I could do to improve my ECs. I'm gonna volunteer start volunteering next week at a local hospital. I'm also planning to get a EMT-B license after my MCAT. Probaly can't get a job or anything but theirs a few volunteer EMT place around me that I could probaly help out. Anything else seems important that I need as far as EC?

Also do they really take update letters? Since I figure I won't get much hours in by the time I send in my apps. Would sending in a letter to say I'm doing these things sound kind of pretentious?

I'm guessing the lack of clinical experience was your downfall. But you said you're still waitlisted at two schools? For god's sake, dude, get on that!! Have you sent a letter of interest to each school? Any contacts at those schools that might put a good word in? For the next few weeks, I would focus more on getting off those waitlists than on reapplying.
