Hello, I wanted to know if I am able to apply as a transfer student to another Osteopathic medical school. I withdrew from a school far away from my home state for personal reasons. My mother was ill, and I left school after a year to take care of her. I want to return to school to finish my degree. I finished my first year with good grades and left school voluntarily for personal reasons. However, I do not want to return to my original school because its far away from home. I I want to be near family. Can I apply as a transfer? Or do I need to reapply again?

I would talk your dean and have them help you out, but generally you should just finish up your second year and try to do your rotations near your family or accept that either way you'll likely be far away from family during your rotations.

It's not easy to get back in once you're out. You need to talk to your dean. BTW Med schools rarely allow transfers, therefore your best chance lies with your school.

Why didn't you just take a leave of absence?

Agree that you should talk to your old Dean first. However, of you left in poor academic standing, you have a huge uphill battle.

I left in good academic standing, in the upper 25 percent of the class, I initially took a leave but my mother's illness lasted longer and I decided to withdraw. The reason I do not want to return is the school is far away from my home state.

If you can explain it like this, then I think you have a decent chance. How is your mom doing? If she's better, you'll need to also demonstrate that you can't keep running beck home if she gets sick. In medical school, you do have to be somewhat selfish with demands upon your time from your family.
