Reapplying during intern year

Hey guys,

I have the unfortunate pleasure of reapplying during my intern year (we do have a derm program at my institution but I hear they rarely take prelims). I need to put in my vacation requests very soon and am trying to figure out when to have them in (4 weeks). From last yr, most of my interviews (4) were in January so I am thinking of taking 2 weeks off in Jan and 2 weeks off in say November in order to go rotate somewhere else (in addition to doing a home derm rotation). I think I have 2 weeks that my program lets me go rotate outside of our hospital in total. Any thoughts on this? Any suggestions on what else I should do (besides researching like crazy in the dept and trying to network up a storm). All of those who went through something similar, I hope you can provide some input.

A friend of mine did this during the most recent application and successfully found a position outside the match that starts in July 2010. She made sure to schedule an elective in January with an understanding attending who said she could take as much interviewing time as she needed. She didn't do any derm aways during intern year.

Thank you for the reply. Anyone else out there with any opinion on this? I know many of the current residents out there had to reapply at least once or knew others who had to so any help would be greatly appreciated = )
