Hi,

Thanks in advance - I'm wondering if anybody has declined interview offers in the main match and then applied to the same program/hospital in the SOAP. Would this hinder your chance to get interviews again because you turned them down once already?

I'm a Canadian Medical Graudate applying to Family Medicine in the Canadian and US match. The thing is, I prefer to match in Canada because residency is 2 years (vs. 3 years) but the match results come out after the US Main Match. I really don't want to sit out for another year and would gladly do a 3 year Family Medicine residency anywhere (city/urban/prestige doesn't matter).

I'm wondering if I should apply to the Main Match at all or just to apply in SOAP if I don't match in Canada. I don't know where I stand in terms of competitiveness and I think the only real gauge for me is to apply broadly in the main match and see how many interviews I get. In the slim chance that I get a good number, and I turn alot of them down to try at the Canadian match, will I have screwed myself over for SOAP? Would I have a better chance of matching if I only applied in SOAP? In general, I'm thinking SOAP would be more competitive than main match because the higher tier students who didn't get their specialty are now trying to the same spots as I am (or am I wrong in this thinking?)

Cheers!

Hi. Only applying to SOAP would be a bad idea. Is the only reason why you prefer Can to US the 1 year difference? If it is, I would rethink. An extra year of training is very important and will let you spread your wings faster once you graduate. Training will be great no matter where you go. FM is extremely broad and I can't imagine learning everything in 2 years. 3 years is a stretch TBH. I think you have a decision to make: Where to go all in. If you really want Can, then focus all of your efforts there. If you decide, US, then do the same there. SOAP is not a sure thing, and you should definitely not count on it.

Ultimately, if you want to practice in Canada.. just apply and do it over there, doing residency in the US and than moving back will give you a bit of a challenge as you learn the business aspect of being a physician in each place. There are huge differences (i.e. OHIP vs. Insurances).

Same the other way around.

Fortunately, there is some reciprocity either which way, but ultimately, you'll have a easier time to train in the same place as where you intend to work.

Also, I agree, SOAP is bad, its generally not going to get you a higher chance of matching, let alone in a good, favourable program.

How come you are applying to the american match in the first place? The match rate for canadian grads in FM is pretty staggering.. unless you're hiding red flags.. which will make your SOAP process harder.
