The applicant pool doesn't vary enough that you would get in the following year with the same application b/c the other applicants weren't as competative as they were the previous year.

I suppose that it varies school to school, but the second time around, I only applied to schools which waitlisted me, and I ended up getting in to one (and waitlisted at the others). If the school waitlisted you, it means you are qualified but others were slightly more desirable. By applying again, you show that you are truly interested in the school, and I think that gives you a little bit of an edge.

Applying earlier probably helps turn that waitlist into an aceptance. Heck, you already have a fair idea that the school likes you.

What I've heard agrees with kcrd: If a school has waitlisted you, they felt you were capable, but they just had other candidates they felt were better matches. I'd say reapply early as possible and let them know that you were waitlisted previously (for those apps that allow you to do so). Showing interest cannot hurt and hell, I'd say your chances of admission go way up at a school that's waitlisted you previously. There's also some schools that will retrieve your previous LORs so that helps with the red tape as well.

Still, there's those horror stories out there. Wasn't there an SDNer who interviewed at Northwestern or Vandy, was waitlisted but ultimately not accepted who then reapplied the next year and was rejected pre-secondary?

Anyhow, those are my subjective 2 cents and GOD I HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO REAPPLY. Crossing fingers for my waitlists as well. G'luck to you Ramoray.

I'm wondering if it will look bad to adcoms if they see that you reapplied (meaning that you don't believe you'll get off their waitlist this summer), and reject you as a self-fulfilling prophecy or something

having been through this before, i would say to go ahead and add those schools now if you are reapplying anyways. two different deans last year suggested that i reapply if interested in spite of being waitlisted. of course i was too broke to reapply until mid-september, so i didn't, and i ended up getting in to both. in lieu of the anecdote about the columbia guy above, i would say it is probably in your best interest to directly contact your respective deans of admissions and ask them what they think. there is nothing wrong with asking, and they will most likely be impressed that you have the balls to talk to them (as opposed to asking advice from a bunch of nobodies on a website!).

do you have to interview again if your waitlisted and apply again there? Seems kinda pointless.

yeah, we shouldn't have to interview- or even submit our application to amcas- we should just be able to call the school, send them like 50 bones and be like, 'what up, yizzo??? so, how we rollin' this year? riiiigh.... riiight. well, take this and call me kid, peezies. and that's on the reezy, my neezy.'

If you are interested in those schools, contact the admissions office and set up an interview to talk about why you didn't get in and address those issues. I would also look at the schools you applied to and make sure that it is a good match - rather than following cost, location, reputation, etc.

On the down side, I did just that with UIC and was rejected post-secondary. I finally coaxed an interview out of them and I am still waiting to hear the results. The only thing I can draw from that is that the admissions staff and the admissions board aren't on the same page.

Good luck.
