My top 10 school has graduate students teaching introductory English courses (I'm not sure how common this is at other institutions where graduate students are usually just TAs for classes). I did very well in an intro English class that I took with a graduate student instructor and I know that this instructor would write a great letter of recommendation for me. I'm applying to an early assurance medical program that requires 3-4 letters. I would like to ask my English instructor for a letter. In addition to his letter, I would have letters from my PI, a science professor, and a PhD with whom I work closely on science outreach. Any thoughts on whether I should be asking my not-yet-PhD instructor for a letter?

Get the TA faculty advisor, course faculty member, or dept chair to counter sign letter.

So the grad student is listed as the full instructor on the course (his name is the one that shows up on all course listings). I guess I can ask him if it would be possible to add the introductory english chair (if there is one) to sign off as well

-A grad student is not faculty
-A grad student usually does not have depth and experience to be considered for effective evaluation
-every TA has an academic advisor and/or faculty course member
-the letter should be titled with faculty name

Thanks for the info. I'm going to email him back and ask if he could have the course chair also sign off on the letter so that there is a faculty member on it. Since he will probably be the one to actually submit, I'm going to put his name on the recommendation request. Does this sound ok to do?
