hey all!
i've been searching through threads and found several people claiming that you give up some financial help from the school if you write a LOIntent.

Are these claims true? Does it depend on the school?

thanks in advance!

I would imagine for the most part, the department of financial aid puts together financial aid packages, while the department of admissions determines who is admitted. I've never heard of this being the case, and I doubt it would matter.

There is no way of knowing, I personally don't think Letters of intent or interest make any difference either way. This however may be false and I have no way of proving my claim.

Very few people actually get extra need-based or merit-based financial aid. So unless you meet the school-specific criteria for parental and personal EFC this is a non-issue. If you do, then a LOI will make no difference and it is all based on your FAFSA.

Well a couple of things...

1) As above, very few people get anything above need based aid for med school. You writing a LOI certainly shouldn't affect that aid in any way.

2) As for merit aid - most people writing LOIs got waitlisted. Most people who get waitlisted don't get merit based based scholarships.

I was accepted to multiple med schools and by far my best financial aid package was from the school to which I wrote a letter of intent. I doubt that the financial aid office even knows who wrote letters of intent. I don't think it matters at all.
