Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you guys in on the secret to getting AOA in most medical schools. I've found there's actually 2 ways and if you followed either, you're gonna get AOA no matter what your scores or grades or how hard you work.

First method...
Work really hard, bust your butt in med school. Do really well the first 2 years and study like heck for step 1. Try your best and get a bunch of honors in M3. Unfortunately, this method is really tough and hard on the social life.

Second method...
Go out drinking and partying all nights. Don't have to study that much. Just get by in basic science, clinicals, and boards. On the ward, must dress really slutty showing your cleavage to all the attendings and residents. Sleep with most residents on demand and suck a lot of @$$ sometimes literally. This method is very easy to do and let you have a bunch of free time.

By the way, if some of you think I'm bitter and sarcastic (in case you can't tell) because I didn't get AOA. I did get it by using the first method but I feel so dirty about it and I don't feel it's worth all the hype, sacrifice, and honor of the organization.

This is why I'm glad that our school bases AOA solely on class rank.

I got it as well, but by hard work. I didn't work hard to get AOA, I worked hard because I have high personal standards in the delivery of health care. AOA simply came up in the scheme of things. The status does help somewhat in applying to residency and does offer utility.

It is my impression that at schools where AOA is more political than academic the politics is about azz-kissing the Dean and faculty, not residents and attendings.

Insofar as program directors pay much attention to AOA, it's sort of obvious who got it for political reasons (weak grades/Step scores/bland application) and who got it for academics (solid grades, Step scores, evals, clinical honors).
