ooh, maybe we should note the genres too, if possible. the get a bit tricky sometimes. i don't think i could 'properly' classify a lot of my music.

does anyone know any sites similar to pandora? i like it when i don't feel like choosing what music i want to listen to, and i feel like hearing new things....but it's pretty horrible for when i am in the mood to download something. put in something like basement jaxx and it gets really confused. i put in something by the silversun pickups one day and it gave me scarlet johannson! it works a bit better with rap though.

Well, since everyone else cheated...

TOOL, Bjork, Beck, Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails are the bands I will always love.

I have a secret love affair with ABBA.

I also enjoy 80s music... Duran Duran, anyone?

But, here is my third song:

Get Confused - Fischerspooner

Great thread! I've been sitting here previewing all the songs on iTunes for the past half hour =) Even discovered a new MGMT song I love, and that my boyfriend apparently has way better music taste than I because he's already got a bunch of these songs!

Here are my 3 contributions, with the warning that I am SO NOT as indie-chic as most of you people!

1. "Winter" - Joshua Radin (I love this man)
2. "Skinny Love" - Bon Iver
3. "Silver Lining" - Rilo Kiley

And Ingrid Michaelson can get me through pretty much any super-stressed vet-school-induced depression that may wash over me...

You are my music soulmate!! I just saw Joshua Radin (w/Dar Williams!) here in Gainesville last month.

My 3:
1. Cooling - Tori Amos
2. With Arms Outstretched - Rilo Kiley
3. Breakdown More - Eric Hutchinson

Too many to list--so I'll categorize a few:

Best Song to Listen to While Working (from wrapping spay packs to sorting laundry): "Sure Shot"-Beastie Boys

Song that Reminds Me of My Husband: "White & Nerdy" -Weird Al (my SO has the comic books & action figures to prove it!)

Best Really Old Song Without Words: (tie) "Hungarian dance No. 5" -Brahms, and "In the Hall of the Mountain King" -Grieg

twelvetigers, I could basically copy & paste your last post--lots of my favorites on there. I'd add Morphine, Gorillaz, Moby, My Morning Jacket, Depeche Mode, Death Cab for Cutie, Johnny Cash, Chemical Brothers, Kaiser Chiefs, Social Distortion, Squirrel Nut Zippers....I'd better stop, because I'm beyond cheating now. 😉

It's awesome that the OP likes MGMT. I went to college with them a few years ago. Awesome band. If you like them you should also listen to an up-and-coming band called Boy Crisis, they have an awesome song called Dressed to Digress it's really catchy. Both MGMT and Boy Crisis went to the same college and have a similar sound.

Here is a video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur8GygV6St0

Niicce.....It's got a good beat, & you can dance to it (or detangle your dog's fur, like I just did.) I'd give it a 9. 😀

Wow! I've never felt so out of touch with music lol. I've never heard of the vast majority of these groups (but downloading as we speak!) Are a lot of these indie music? If so, that would explain why Im so out of the loop.

1. Matt Kearney-America

2. Damien Rice- Cannonball

3. Should've Been A Cowboy- Toby Keith

Cuitlamiztli, good to see another country fan!🙂

I'm with you there!! I'm really not into rock or any of its multitude of subgenres so I haven't heard of very many either.

My favourite music changes based on what I've just listened to lol, mostly LOTS of country and pop/Top 40 (random, I know).

Current 3 (if you asked me tomorrow it would likely be very different, lol)
Dust on the Bottle - David Lee Murphy
Paper Planes - MIA (LOVED slumdog millionaire haha!!!)
Meet in the Middle - Diamond Rio

Very hard to pick but here goes..
1. "Riot" by Three Days Grace (the best song to listen to when you have been wronged!
2. "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath absolutely great song
3. "Gone Away" by the Offspring, although any of their songs are great
(tie with "Last Call" LeeAnn Womack, or anything by Devil wears prada)

You just inspired me to download Journey's Greatest Hits. 🙂 I'll check out the other two songs as well.

What a great thread... I love being introduced to new music! Music is my ultimate coping mechanism... right now I am on inspirational fixes.

1. Cheesy inspirational: Don't Stop Believing - Journey
2. Happy inspirational: What is the Light? - The Flaming Lips
3. Passionate inspirational: The Patient (w/ Eon Blue Apocalypse intro) - Tool

Hope you guys enjoy!

Hmm last.fm might be helpful, but you cannot listen to as many tracks as Pandora.

I'm loving everyone's picks. Can't go wrong with Journey, MIA, Tori Amos...lots of great music, and I was really psyched to see another Brand New fan.

Maybe we could make make an offical SDN playlist for '09?

We totally are! I *love* seeing Joshua Radin in person, and I've had Eric Hutchinson's "Rock & Roll" on my playlist for the past 3 months =)

Yes, MGMT is one of my new favorites. I'll add Boy Crisis to my "listen" list!

I went into American Eagle the other day (for a $10 zip-up boy's hoodie, TYVM) and I was aghast to hear a song that I thought was really cool and still mostly underground. Guess not! Eww, popular music. 😉

Hmm, I like this Boy Crisis band. It's like Astra Moveo + Spoon

i've been steering clear of this thread, cuz i know i will spend too much time coming up with the perfect 3, but curiosity got the better of me. just wanna say, to those of you who posted the following bands:

rilo kiley (yay!), bon iver, beirut, the promise ring, flight of the conchords (yay!), andrew bird, kings of leon (yay!), frightened rabbit, okkervil river, mgmt, gogol bordello (yay!), arcade fire, santogold

those are all bands that i have heard on NPR's "All Songs Considered," a weekly half-hour podcast that has served as my chief music source for a few years now. the host plays a selection from new albums, mostly. if your taste runs along the lines of indie rock (with some intriguing world music, alternative hiphop, and electronica mixed in for variety), then check it out! (any other fans here?)

there is no perfect 3 😛 it would almost maybe be possible if you did 3 per genre, or sub-genre

ooh, sounds like my kinda deal. thanks! of the stuff you listed, i'm only familiar with santogold

DollyyLlama: I am a huge NPR junkie, good deal!
and I love the Who (Favorite Band!!! YAY) and Gogol Bordello (Those Guys are freakin' awesome)...but I don't really know much of the other music posted on the thread (great thread though).

My Three Are:
1. "Take Five" -Dave Brubeck Quartet...coolest music to study to in fact the whole "Time Out" album is awesome for that. If you dig odd time, dig this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwNrmYRiX_o
2. "If I Had a Boat" "- Lyle Lovett... But really anything off of "Pontiac" or "L.L. and his Large band". Good Clean the House music...or not clean the house music, whatever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-_W18CWypE
3. "Last Night I had a Dream" -Randy Newman...and again anything by Randy Newman really. His music makes me happy even when it's sad. (my husband hates it though "too slow"...He's busy listening to Phish and Oysterhead...or Radiohead..bands with the word "head" in their name) Here's "Short People" because I can't find "Last Night.." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nvg...66F0A6EBD&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8

Three is really hard because you kind of get on a roll....Fun Thread! SO in the tradition of the thread I will list a bunch of others that I love!!!

Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, The Who, Joni Mitchell, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Dr. John, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Charles Mingus, Igor Stravinsky, The Funk Brothers (read "motown") and on and on! Listen and Enjoy!

Ok I though about this a bit but it was really hard to get it down to three.
I guess they are just three songs I think everyone should hear rather than my three favorites.
1)The Pretender--Foo Fighters. no explanation needed

2)Creep--Radiohead. Just a classic kinda awkward love song

3)The Best Day--Taylor Swift. It the only song on that darn album that she doesn't sing about kissing boys in the rain.

(Cheater time...B***es aint s**t--Ben Folds. anyone who can put a rap song to piano deserves some credit.)

And twelvetigers, I blame you for my new online addiction of Pandora. SHAME

Ive seen some pretty good stuff on here (Josh Radin, Santogold, MGMT, Justice......). Thank god Nickelback, Saliva, Linkin Park, Slipknot..... and crap like that hasnt been showing up. Im sorry, but you can tell a lot about a person by what he/she listens to. Ive noticed that metal has been sadly ommitted from most of your choices.......so i guess ill start it up. sorry guys...but there is nothing better than a face melting guitar solo.:boom:

1. Conducting from the Grave - When Legends Become Dust
2. After the Burial - Berzerker

and of course......

3. Metallica - Battery OR Master of Puppets (too hard to decide)

I hope to god im not the only metal kid in vet school.....its gunna get lonely rocking out without another connoisseur of metal to join me.

The same thing happened to me recently! I went into the Fossil store a couple of weeks ago and heard something I thought no one else really knew about and I was a little shocked! I don't mind sharing with you guys though... it was "The Story I Heard" by Blind Pilot. Good song!

Sorrryyyy!! But... you know you like it. Lol.

You know, Creep is my least favorite Radiohead song. Which isn't to say it's a bad song, but it's kind of like Change in the House of Flies by the Deftones - you can only hear it so many times before you want to scream "ENOUGH!"

For the metal lover - I think the Deftones is in the right direction at least... I saw them live and couldn't hear for a week. 😀 But, I have some Dimmu Borgir songs on my computer... that's the far end of the spectrum for me.

I didn't realize that Datarock was so popular until I saw them on some iTunes commercial/advertisement. Weird! The song I heard in AE was... oh, what was it... something by the Presets. Iunno.

They also played Coldplay, which was no surprise, but they played Lost - which is my fave, so it made me smile.

Dimmu Borgir!!!! thats what im talkin about! :meanie: Norwegian Death Metal is at the far end of the spectrum, but thats where all the action is at (Im Norwegian....so im predisposed to like metal)! Im glad to have found someone with a little taste on this site (jk!). Metal is kind of the reason i wanted to become a vet, cause eventually I will be able to sew the bat heads back on after theyre bitten off (Ozzy).

Eww. 😀

Well, you can thank my husband for the Dimmu and the Cannibal Corpse... he was an interesting teenager. I enjoyed it right along with him, and wore baggy black pants and kitty ears to school... erryeah. We were cool.

I still think that being able to sleep while listening to Dimmu is a considerable talent, and one that I probably could still manage. But, we're all grown up now, so the hubs falls asleep at 9pm watching Modern Marvels on TV. 🙂

Thanks for the inadvertent trip down memory lane!

Ha ha ya I do like it. And I know what you mean about it can get a little overbearing, kind of like if you hear Smells Like Teen Spirit 80 million times. it can happen to any unsuspecting good song. But I stand by if people haven't heard it, they should.

HAHAHAHA!!!! I love it. I never wore the black, or anything like that. Im just a strikingly handsome nerd (except i have some ear plugs and a viking ship tattooed across my back...... maybe not that striking).....

Sleeping while listening to Dimmu Borgir is a feat very few have acheived. You might be a Jedi, or 90% deaf.

Sounds like your husband and I would get along just fine.

My husband gets along with EVERYBODY. I don't get it.

I get along with everyone... on the internet. I'm a bit harder to ignore in person. 😉

So no one else here likes Bjork? Lol.

I'm in with you on Bjork--love "Army of Me" and "Human Behavior"....also like "It's So Quiet". (Is that one just her, or The Sugarcubes? Can't recall..)

my favorites...

1. Paranoid Android- Radiohead
2. Three Seed- Silversun Pickups
3. Conspiracy- Paramore

See, Paranoid Android - now THAT'S an excellent Radiohead song. 🙂

Bjork is odd, but her music is strange and wonderful! It's oh so Quiet is just her, the video is super cute, you should look it up on youtube!

Hidden Place
is my favorite song of hers...

"now i have been quite shy
but i can smell a pinch of hope
to almost have allowed
once fingers
to stroke
the fingers i was given to touch with
but careful, careful
there lies my passion, hidden
there lies my love
i'll hide it under a blanket
lull it to sleep
i'll keep it in a hidden place
"

I won't vouch for the 100% accuracy of that since I typed it from memory. It's funny how the songs you love really stick with you. I feel sorry for my husband because I can't really sing all that well, and yet there's always a song in my head as I mill about the house... and I'm prone to outbursts.

Example:

Hubs: [in the kitchen making a sandwich]

Me: [slides in with sock feet]

Me: "I LOVE YOU BAY-BEE, AND IF IT'S QUITE ALL RIGHT, I NEED YOU BAY-BEE, TO WARM THE LONELY NIGHT, I LOVE YOU BAY-BEE, TRUST ME WHEN I SAY..."

Hubs: [continues making sandwich without looking up]

Me: [shuffles off into next room] "OH PRETTY BABY, DON'T BRING ME..."

Yeah, I'm certifiable. But never a dull moment! 😉

Twelvetigers, you crack me up! I'm a little shy about singing in front of other people, but I like to sing to the horses, or to my little stalk-eyed flies.

Warning, country/folk dork ahead . . . two fun songs for driving, cleaning, or dancing around the house convincing your cats that you need to be institutionalized.

1. Taking the Long Way Around -- The Dixie Chicks -- seems appropriate for pre-vet/vet students who are starting down a long, hard road.

Guess I could have made it easier on myself
But I, I could never follow

2. "Whiskey and Beer" -- Brooke and John McLaughlin were the founding members of Tinsmith, a local (Washington DC) Irish folk band. There has been turnover in the band, but the sound is similar.

A little less peppy; more of a brooding sound:

3. Anything by Alison Krauss and Union Station. I recently got their "So Long, So Wrong" CD, and it's hard to pick even from one CD! I guess the title track fits in better with the theme of the above songs.

Way too funny for words....

I don't usually belt into song--I just break out the super-lame dance moves. Some of them I'm proud to say I learned from Moby's "Bodyrock" video.

I make up song-and-dance routines in regards to whatever I'm doing at the moment...greatest hits include the "Water Bottle Filling Up Song", the "Leashing the Puppies Waltz", and "Gimme Coffee Nice And Hot". . .

Definitely a toss up on either song but
1. "Bandages"/"Talk to me Dance with Me"- Hot Hot Heat
2. "Bruises"- Chairlift
3. "I Hate Everyone" - Get Set Go

Enjoy 🙂

Is it too stereotypical if I say "Seasons of Love" from RENT?

Stuff I listen to outside of my Broadway obsession that I think people should listen to at least once:

1) "Domino Effect" - Ozma
2) "Danger! High Voltage" - Electric Six
3) "Radio" - Rancid

I think that's a good cross-section, if a bit erratic, of stuff that I listen to...

This is an amazing thread!

But i would have to second that Creep-Radiohead is a very weak song if you really what to know their best in my opinion its got to be the album OK,Computer. I'm kind of a Radiohead freak.

Since I can't pick the perfect three is it cheating to just suggest 3 bands to check out?🙄

Radiohead-recommending Ok,Computer though In Rainbows for me comes in as a close second.

Devendra Banhart- Start with the album Rejoicing in the Hands

Air-Moon Safari the most mellowing album ever, perfect for when we're all stressing over our first exams and need a little brain break.😀
