Hello I was wondering if you would be able to give me advice and any tips on asking for recommendation letters. I am looking for the most professional way of confronting dentists and professors to ask them to write a recommendation letter for applications. Thanks in advance!

That approach might not be the best.

My biggest piece of advice is to ask well in advance of when you need the letters. Some evaluators are very prompt, but others can take several months to write the letter. Some bio and chem professors get over a hunderd requests for LOEs from pre-dental and pre-med students, and it can take a while.

As for the process of requesting the letter, I would recommend this advice:

And once you finally know which school you will attend, I think it's nice to tell each of your evaluators where you will be going.

In my opinion, I think it's always good to get to know the professor before you ask them for a letter. I always went to their office hours (even if I really didn't need help) and asked for some help on the certain material we are covering. After that, I'd just have a nice conversation with them. I do that for a while every so often and eventually ask them for a letter when you know each other well. It's always good to give them a personal statement, your resume, and a picture of you to help him right the letter.

That's just the way I do it though.
