everywhere - whether on sdn, in emails from schools, or at interviews - i keep seeing that this cycle was a "record year of applications" to a particular school. it seems like most schools have gotten more applications than usual this year. i know the number of medical school applications has been steadily increasing over the years, but i'm getting the impression that this cycle there was a considerable spike.

is this phrase something schools say every cycle, or is it actually unique to this cycle?

I think more and more students are applying every year. Similarly, more schools (DO and MD) are opening up every year. That being said, I don’t think it is one to one and the “acceptance rate” is steadily dropping.

I could be totally wrong, that is just the pattern I’ve been noticing.

Might also have to do with students applying more broadly this year compared to previous years, increasing the total number of applications schools receive. I have no data to support this though.

There are big up and down swings in the popularity of medical school. See below:

That said, I think we are currently at an all time high (in terms of absolute number of applicants) and still appear to be climbing: See below plotted a while back by Lawper

Efle always hitting us with the stats lol, thanks for the data!

I can see why the number of total applicants across all schools is increasing because of new MD/DO schools opening, but I was wondering more for individual schools that have gotten more apps than usual. For example, at WVU they said they usually get <5,000 apps per year, but this year they had at least 6,000 (if I remember correctly).

Maybe this would explain the school-by-school increase? Especially for the mid/low-ranked schools that are OOS friendly and have been recommended to pretty much every applicant

It will be a record year every year as long as US (read US, and read it again, US), MD and DO residents are nearly guaranteed a residency. Unlike other expensive journeys such as law school, you will be guaranteed a good job with good pay as long as you complete residency. It doesn't matter whether you're at Harvard or the weakest school, you'll make a living. With law school, it's top 14 or bust, and if you drop $50k a year for a fourth tier school, you may end up with a minimum wage job. Once US medical students start getting squeezed out of the match, then you'll maybe start seeing a downward shift.
