As a High school teacher, it is my job to attend and help commemorate the graduating seniors high school graduations. I watch each student come in and struggle with their regalia, draping each stoll uncertainly and hesitantly. In a few minutes, they will walk into the crowded auditorium and their families will cheer and applaud. These students have overcome a lot in order to graduate from high school, and will do even more to become college graduates. I do celebrate that, but these were not my students so more than anything, it makes me hungry for my next step.
I have allowed the fear of the MCAT, of the sacrifices involved in medical school to keep me away from my dream for so many years. I am 31 years old and have accomplished a great deal... I've been in grad school with full funding, had schools clamoring to get me to teach with them, and finished two bachelor's degree plus an associate's. Glancing at my colleagues in this room, I can guarantee that I have more academic hours than even those with PhDs, and with all that, I've maintained a 3.8 GPA. However, no success, no matter how great, has been left untainted by the ache I have to become a doctor. Finally, I'm refusing to allow fear to keep me from my true path. I hope these students will do the same.
Today, I will hear Pomp and Circumstance and honor those around me as they begin their paths, but my thoughts, my silent prayer, will be for two ceremonies I can only begin to
imagine... our white coat ceremonies and M.D. graduations - the continuation of
our paths. As you, dear reader, reach for those ultimate goals, I hope you will allow nothing to stop you or persuade you to defer your dreams. Good luck.
