dear all:

i'm a new member to this thread, and have decided to post my dilemma here because i'm simply at my wit's end regarding what grad schools i can apply for.

i'm currently an international medical school student who will graduate in june of 2009. so far i am quite determined to pursue the field of psychiatry, for i have great passion regarding this field (much much more than other fields of medicine). after graduation, i plan to obtain a masters degree in the US in a related field that, upon completion, will hopefully increase my chance of obtaining residency (in the field of psychiatry) in the US. i've consulted one of the psychiatrists at my hospital who had obtained a masters degree in Mental Health from JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health. since the department of mental health is definitely an appropriate area of study for prospective psychiatrists, this program certainly seems like the number one choice for me. however, to my dismay, i am unable to find similar programs offered by other universities. does anyone know of similar programs elsewhere (since applying only for one school is incredibly risky!), or just any programs that you deem as an appropriate field of study, or an extension of study, for prospective psychiatrists?

i'm in desperate need of any suggestions, as I am currently in Taiwan and have no one to go to for further advice. any comments/suggestions/guidance would be greatly needed and appreciated!!!

There is a similar type of master's degree program offered at Harvard that is called the Master of Science in Society, Human Development and Health that focuses on many mental health issues. Here is the link in case you are interested:

You can click on the "Courses" on the left of the webpage to see if their offerings of classes would be of interest to you. Good luck!

gosh u're a life-saver! i really appreciate this information. will definitely go check this out. thanx again 😀!!!

The University of Chicago offers an interdisciplinary MA in Social Science that allows you to focus on/ take classes in Human Development, Sociology, Medical Anthropology, Public Health (through the school of public policy), epidemiology, etc., all of which are relevant to psychiatry. I know someone who did this program and she loved it.

will definitely look into them. thank u all again for ur input....u have no idea how valuable such info is for me 🙂
