Regrets on interviews.

I have this huge regret on this school interview I attended.
They asked me too much questions beyond what I thought before.
So I freaking mumbled, and threw some weird jokes.

I still think of this question as one of my biggest mistake.
Q : Are you planning to take any class next semester?
A : Nope.

.... Seriously? I don't know why I just gave them "nope"
I keep thinking about it over and over so now I know the perfect way to say no without the feeling of " I am SO DONE"

OMG, I hate myself.

TALKING BEFORE THE INTERVIEWER FINISHED HIS SENTENCE!! uhhhhhhh it won't leave my mind it was like while i started talking i realized i should of kept my mouth shut!! i keep thinking about it over and over again!!!

I did pretty poorly in my intro to bio classes. The interviewer asked me about them, I gave my prepared response about learning curve for bio (I'm a Math/Chem major), how I did better afterwards, did well on my bio DAT's, yada yada.
He then says, "I see you do a lot of extracurriculars, I'm sure they took a lot of time. If you went here, you'd be more focused on studying and do better, right?" (basically spoon-fed me an "excuse").
I stupidly responded, "Well, yes, but I think the main reason I did poorly was because of the learning curve. (explaining the different approaches to bio vs. chem/math."

I don't know why I didn't just agree with him and move on...

Later in this interview, I ask about the research program, saying I couldn't really find much online about what the program was geared towards (getting hands wet or individual projects). He says the information IS on the website and says it's mostly to familiarize people with what happens on the science side. After the interview, I realized that my interviewer was the associate dean for research.... FML! Haha...

In order to cope, I tell myself that the school wasn't a good fit for me and I'd be happier at the other two schools I interviewed with... Haha...

It's okay! I think all of us have been there. I certainly have.

It's easy to kick yourself after the fact, but many of the people there feel the exact same way. Plus, in my opinion someone who makes mistakes is human, which is better than someone who just regurgitates politically correct answers like a robot with no passion.

Just keep in mind, that you are picking a school just as much as they are picking you. If they don't accept you, it's probably not an environment that you would have meshed with anyways.

Oh my god...I am so glad I'm not the only one that had this problem!!! LOL! I didn't feel like my interview went terrible, but in retrospect I definitely didn't give the answers I would have liked to. Of course on my drive home 30 minutes later, after replaying the entire interview in my head a dozen times, I had awesome answers!! Someone needs to invent a time machine so I can go back and rock that interview.

They focused a lot on things that I didn't do in academics, such as research. They completely threw me off guard. I was expecting questions similar to those I had read on SDN. It was also my first interview, at my top choice school. I'm sure most people have the same feeling after their interview. Some might not like to admit it 🙂

I'm also sure that the interviewers are used to seeing people in high states of anxiety and stress. I think that the problems you guys had, like speaking before you realized that they weren't done asking a question, or not taking their hints, happen aaaaall the time. Don't stress about it!! Look a little further for other threads about this same topic...some of the things other people do or say in their interviews will make you feel A LOT better!

Theres a thread I like to read on the pre-med forms about worst interview answers. It cheers me up, because people who thought they bombed their interview get accepted 😀

I had a female and a male interviewing me. It went well other then at the end of it I said: Thank you guys. Just slipped of my tongue instead of just saying thank you. Hopefully it is not going to affect their decision too much.
