My application circles around the MD/PHD program...and how i'd love to integrate basic research with clinical practice. But if you are rejected for the joint program but invited for an MD interview...is it all lost?
Have any of you been offered an MD only interview even though your AMCAS is all about medicine and research? How could you justify your intent for an MD only after being rejected for the joint program at that school?

You justify it by telling them you plan to apply to the MD/PhD program during your MS1 year. At least, that's what I did at my Pitt interview...

You can say you are planning on doing research as an MD or MD/PhD. Lots of MDs do great basic sci research without the PhD. In the research world, MD and/or PhD are going to be considered very equivalent, while DDS DO PharmD are generally not as respected. Chancellor of UCSF is a MD and won the nobel prize for basic sci research. I respect any doctorates, but the head of most universities (if not all) are MD and/or PhD. If you get either one, and do great research, you'll be fine.
