Hi, I've read that REM phase takes about 90 mins of total sleep in one night. And that it occurs mostly during the last half of the night, "being progressively longer as night goes on".
In the same book (kaplan lecture notes), later when it talks about developmental aspects of sleep, it says that in adults, "initial REM cycle: approximately 90 minutes, and subsequent cycles across the evening are shorter".
I find that contradictory, unless it is talking about the time to reach the first REM cycle is 90 minutes and then the rest cycles are shorter as we age.
Also, can somebody confirm these statements?
Average adult pattern:falls asleep, enters Stage 1 NREM, then Stage 2 NREM, then delta (= stages 3 and 4 NREM), then REM. This cycle happens around 4-5 times per night.
Per night, REM phase is 20% (90 minutes) and the rest is NREM (NREM length is variable between individuals, and 65% of it is inherited).
