A pt was assigned to me this week. Premolar tooth has been prepped and temped already. Pt was referred for CLP weeks ago and was allowed adequate healing. Now I have to refine the prep. The post on the amalgam post and core buildup was about 4-5mm from the CEJ. Now the margins will be lowered further and I'm assuming there will only be about 3 mm of amalgam in the canal for retention. Perio resident suggested that the post was too short and I agree.

What's the best way to remove amalgam from the canal? an ultra sonic? I can't imagine taking a bur into the canal or using a gates glidden to remove the set amalgam.

Or is it just best to leave the about 3-4 mm of amalgam post in there?

It can be removed with a 330 bur in a high speed. Carefully with good light start in the middle of the amalgam and work out toward the perimeter.

I'm guessing a 329 will also work if the canal is quite narrow?

your not going to vibrate it out thats for sure, try pizzo or a carbide burr your going to be safe as long as your removing amalgam once you see white stop and reorient or take an xray.

Remove this post like you would remove any other amalgam restoration. Just be cautious as you go deeper into the canal. You don't want to catch the bur on the GP and pull it out of the canal. It's much less complex than you make it out to be. :luck:
