Hi all,

I'd really appreciate some advice on this. I'm an IMG and will be graduating in 2o15. Due to personal reasons, I will only be applying to begin residency a year after graduating (2016). I will spend that extra year working as a medical intern. However, I'm currently doing US clinical rotations, hence am planning to ask for LORs now.

These seem to be my main options:

1) Apply for an ECFMG token this year, and have my referees upload their LORs, but don't submit my application. This will mean that I will be a repeat applicant the following year, and I'm wondering if the sheer fact of my being a repeat applicant will disadvantage my application, even if it isn't because I was unsuccessful the first time round. I called ECFMG and they said this won't be a disadvantage, although there seem to be rumours that it will be..

2) Ask my letter writers to write their letters now but hold on to them, then submit them next year, when I apply. But I worry that by then I might not be able to get in touch with them!

3) Don't waive my right to view the letters, have the referees send the letters directly to me, and upload them myself next year. But obviously this won't look as good as if I were to waive that right.

Does anyone have any advice on this, or further suggestions? I'd be very grateful for advice on this. Thanks so much.

If you do option #1, no one will ever know you're a repeat applicant. The only way I know you're a repeat is if you apply to my program 2 years in a row, and I notice. The whole stigma regarding repeat applicants is simply that if you're unsuccessful your first year, whatever is limiting your application continues to be a problem the next year, plus the additional year out from graduation.

Thanks for the helpful reply!

Was also wondering if it matters that the letters will be backdated from a year back?
