I took and retook a math class at my uni, and a C- both times. I tried searching for how AMCAS deals with repeat grades, but all I ever saw was a debate between them taking the average of the two, or them averaging both classes in, in which case I have a lot of work to do. So could anyone tell me the exact policy towards this?

What math class? If it's calculus, you need to retake it and get above a C-, since med schools won't accept anything below a C for pre-reqs.

If it isn't calculus, just take the C- and move on. It won't be worth your time to retake it a third time, considering that (from what I understand) AMCAS will average all of the grades together.

1.7 + 1.7 + 4.0 = 7.4 / 3 = ~2.5 = C+

It wasn't calculus so I guess I'll just take the grade

A few people have been confused by the explanation that AMCAS averages the grade together.

What is meant is that all of the grades and their full credit weight are included into your GPA calculations. The reason why this is meaningful is that some people think "I have an average of a C+ in the class after taking it 3 times, so my GPA calculation will include the C+ as my grade the same as if I took the class once and had a C+".

If the class was 3 credits, you would have a 2.5 GPA for 9 credits not 3 credits only.

AACOMAS uses your most recent grade only. That is the advantage of their grade forgiveness policy.

OP, retake the class if its calc or stats or if your university requires you to get a C or better and this is a major-required class. If not, don't retake.

Does AACOMAS just let you take a class over and over until you get the grade you want?

At my school you get two shots and that is it. In other words If I retake a class, my second grade is the absolute final grade that will appear on my transcript. This applies even if the second grade is worse than the first grade.

Granted that is for calculating my university GPA, and it has nothing to do with calculating a medical school GPA.
