so I bumped into this total gunner from my class, who already took his test. He acquired all of NBME's (illegally) with answers (who knows if they're correct). Anyway, he was like, "dude too bad your test is in two days, should have looked at the NBME's."

To those who have already sat for the exam, my question is...
does this punk actually have a big advantage? Are a lot of questions/concepts repeated from NBME's?

I took NBME 4 the day before my test, and I thought it helped for at least a few questions. After I finished the test, I was kicking myself for not having memorized the answers to the other 3 nbmes (I had done them a while back). I think that a lot of people have illegal copies of the nbme's and so it puts you at a disadvantage if you don't.

edit: Ok, so by memorized, I didn't mean *just* memorize the answer... I meant understanding why it was correct as well

Memorising them would be a tremendous waste of time.

I've mentioned this before, I had at least 10 (probably more) verbatim repeats and a few pictures that were switched around on my exam.

If you're going to do an NBME, know why you got a certain question right or wrong. Dont memorize answers, but approach NBME's the same way you would approach USMLE world and you'll be fine. My entire class went through the NBME's pretty heavily and everyones had at least a few repeat questions

My philosophy - if you're going to do the NBME's - spend an extra few hrs to go over them.

It sounds to me like this guy is B.S.ing you. I did NBME 2 and 3 and the tutorial w/150 questions. The repeat questions I saw were from the 150 questions. I think the repeat concepts is kinda nebulous because I could say that the concepts I saw on qbank, I saw on Step I, or saw on USMLE world, etc. I wouldn't let it bother you.

Where on Earth do people find answers to the NBME exams? Do they have some kinda connections within the organization??

its good to check ur wrong 1s in nbme
BUT in my opinion memorising nbme just for the sake that some of them may show up in the exam is a pure waste of time..each1 gets diff test..an the concepts to most of them will be found in various qbanks..
well if u have time, go ahead..

We already discussed this in 2007 experiences. The NBME's are low yield. I took all 4 forms and had no repeats. Do qbank/usmleworld or whatever. Some of those WILL appear on your exam. Only reason to do NBME's is to estimate your score.

The answers on the *illegal* copies are whatever some yahoo thought the right answer was.

That gunner is a ***** and a jerk for freaking you out, I'd just tell that gunner its too bad he spent so long study those exams, he probably could have picked up a few extra points doing something else.

first off, you're just as much of a gunner as your friend is if the first thing you do is get on SDN and inquire about something he said. At least he told you that the NBME helps instead of going on to SDN to bash on what kind of person you are

To answer your question, yes there are repeated concepts on the NBME (I took Form 3 and 4) that shows up on step one (took that 3 days ago). But of course there's going to be repeated concepts, out of 200 questions for each form, a few similar question is bound to show up... the same thing can be say about Kaplan Qbank and USMLEWorld, so you're not missing out. The time you spend reviewing the NBME form, you can memorize something in first aid and I'll bet you'll get just as many question on the subject on step 1.

The NBMEs do give a really good feel for the actual test. Much easier compared to USMLEWorld in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply, and thank you for prefacing it with a lame attempt at an insult.

I've actually seen people selling the retired NBME questions and answers from lik ea decade ago. I'm not quite sure that these woudl be useful at all...

I took all 4 NBME's and didnt come across any repeat questions on the real thing!
