am I screwed for good residencies if I end up having to take anatomy over the summer? I'm barely scraping by in my 1st year 1st semester classes.

any advice would help. thanks.

Depends on the speciality. For IM/Peds/FM/EM/Path they generally won't care about your MS1/2 grades. If you are dying to be an orthopod or a radiologist (or derm, plastics, ENT, etc where they biopsy your entire med school CV before inviting you for interviews) you'd best buck up and not just pass but ace anatomy on the first round.

It's not really going to matter much for moderately competitive stuff. Might hurt you if you want Derm or Plastics.

Just don't let it be the harbinger of something more serious - like a boards failure - and you should be fine.

what about something like med-peds, or maybe even ped-onc.
I know the board scores are a big factor, but are 1st year grades for these specialties?

I've mentioned this before on SDN.

I only failed one course in all of med school: anatomy. Actually the only time I ever failed any class. My grade was a 47. I ended up doing fine in everything else and had to take anatomy a second time between 1st and 2nd year. I actually doubled my score with a 94.

In retrospect, no one really cared. Didn't change anything in 2nd year; only time I ever heard about it again was on my OB/GYN rotation.

I graduated with my class. I matched in the specialty of my choice and went on to residency. Very few interviews ever asked about it. After residency I applied for and was offered an awesome job and I am able to make a living.

Believe me - the whole "fail" grade thing seems like the end of the world. I know - been there. Forget about it. Finish the rest of MS one and then retake the course (with a vengence if need be). Don't sulk too much - other people have gotten past this hurdle and so will you.

Can I ask which specialty you are in?

Screwed more because it means you're probably slower than your average classmate and hence a bad sign of things to come...however as a stand alone event doubt its a problem

Med-Peds is not competitive in terms of numbers, but spots are limited. "Ped-onc" would be a separate fellowship application after a Peds residency -which is also not competitive.
