Hey guys-
So my very first freshman semester I took a non-science biology course and did not pass due missing the final (I was really sick). It's ironic because since then I have transferred to UC Berkeley and majored in Molecular and Cell Biology. Anyway, my non-science bio class was 4 units, and when I took the science major biology it was 5 units. Can I list that as being a course repeat, seeing as how they covered the same exact stuff (just way more detail of course), and both had lab components?
It just won't be listed as a course repeat on my transcript...

From what I've gathered the description must be similar, however if one states for non science majors vs science majors it is likely they won't replace each other.

The titles of the classes were "General Biology" and "Principles of Biology"

And to me, "general biology" and "principles of biology" sound very much like the same class.

Even if they are intended for distinct audience groups, how will AACOMAS know?

They can you know, use the thing called the internet , and look it up to double check?

I guess I am confused...what do you mean by "non-science" biology course? You mean a humanities course? Or simply a biology course designed for non-science majors?

How did this work out for you?

Probably won't get an answer since OP has only last checked SDN about 6 months ago. It most likely went through. As long as the titles are similar and/or the course work is almost the same, it should count.

I did exactly this with no questions asked.

How closely named were your classes? I have a Chem 100, which was called "Chem and the Citizen". It is the most entry level chem the school had. I want to replace it with another school's Chem 111 "Gen Chem". I'm just being paranoid that the different names will cause a problem even though the second class had everything the first class did and then some.

I'd be a bit surprised if the general biology vs POBI thing went through, but you have little to no chance of replacing that class IMO.

Honestly I don't remember exactly but I believe the original class was called Biology for non-majors and I replaced it with Gen Bio 1. The chem I'm not sure about but you can replace it in AACOMAS and see what happens when they verify your app. If its moderately close go for it, if not just deal with it or try to retake the actual class if its that low. Mine was an A replacing a B so it was more of a try it and see what happens rather than out of necessity

It doesnt matter as much as name as it does the official course catalog description. If 1 states non-majors and the other says majors, then it wont fly

Thanks Gonnif. I might be out of luck then. If the course isn't replaced my gpas are going to be 3.48/3.58 instead of 3.51/3.71

There is another course I can retake that would bring me back up. Do you think it is worth it or should I just let the 3.48/3.58 ride?

Hi all,

Lurker & previous poster, but my anonymity was compromised, so I created a new account. Not to hijack, but I was wondering if I could get peoples input/experiences with grade replacement for a few classes that I am needing to retake (original course, followed by retake):

- Organic Chemistry II (3 cr) with Honors Organic Chemistry II with Lab (5 cr)
- BIOC 4xxx Biochemistry I: Structure, Catalysis, and Metabolism (4 cr) with BIOC 3xxx Principles of Biochemistry (4 cr)
- BIOL 3xxx Physiology of Humans and Other Animals (3 cr) with BIOL 3xxx Principles of Physiology (4 cr)
- BIOL 1xxx General Biology (4 cr) with BIOL 2xxx (5 cr) Foundations of Biology for Majors

My primary focus when finding courses or designating courses as replacements was that they were the same general level (ex: all undergraduate courses) and the retake was as many or more credits. After reading this thread, I am thinking this may not work out for me...

I do not doubt Gonnif at all, but I'm afraid the only time we will know for sure is after we apply. I've read a few threads where people had luck as long as the courses were similar.

I've emailed AACOMAS in the past and their guidance was always that they both needed to be undergraduate courses, they need to be equal or greater credit hours, and they need to be the same or similar. I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

This is kind of what I was figuring, but with all the questions and thoughts running around in this thread, I thought I'd ask. I'm going to be very disappointed if these thousands of $$ in retakes don't really count as retakes, though obviously have to recognize that as a possibility. I'm finding the closest classes I can, but don't have unlimited flexibility, since I travel from work, which limits how I can take the classes.
