Report: playing video games could make you a better doctor

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Actually this came up at my emory interview lol..

I know a guy who's really into video games, and he's MS3. He took a year off after second year to do research, and at some point he was doing something with robotic surgery or somesuch, and he said he was better than everybody else because he played so many video games 🙂

I attribute my dexterity to years of piano, painting, and Nintendo. 😉

I mentioned how I liked to play video games at my MCW interview. Obviously it didn't hurt because they let me in a week later

woohooo

all those years not studying and playing vidoo games might have paid off....i knew it was worth something in the long run 🙄

too bad i dont have much time these days..... 🙂

Yeah, I hate how some old farts think that our generation is less "intelligent" because we grew up on video games. 😡 One of my professors for a biology class told us this on the first day of class. I challenge him to a game of Zelda ... NES-style!

I can't stand the new video games, I remember the good 'ol days, playing Super Mario screaming at my brother when he owned me as Ryu, or getting frustrated when I couldn't figure out how to beat zelda (give me a break I was like 10). Now I just play computer games -- Counter-Strike all the way!

New video games will make you better at shooting a martian at 1000 yards.

They say video games are good for GI docs...navigate through that alimentary system with your joystick!

I saw this article too. There's definitely research in general saying video games help reaction.

When I was an undergrad at the U of Rochester, I participated in a study that asked us how much video games we played and then put us in this multi thousand dollar head contraption (more than some cars) that used laser eye tracking and a computer to time our reaction to various stimuli. The study was also on yahoo and in my mens health magazine and found a stat sig relationship between reaction times to stimuli and more video game playing.

It was interesting to see the result in something that I was a subject in, even though I did look ridiculous in that head thing.

Yup. Here I go back to everquest 2 and Farcry.

I always knew it 😎

Sure, Nes games will always be the best because they were the first really good games and we grew up on them... but are you saying that you can't stand HALO 2??!!!! Blasphemy!

Nice. I knew there was a reason I kept up the "nasty habit" - as my mother calls it - during college. I love video games... esp. action/adventure. I know it's corny, but I can't wait to get my hands on the new Jak III game and see if it's any better than the second.
