i can't open my post below because it's labeled as an invalid thread, so i thought i'd repost my question. i'm just wondering if it's better to go ahead and submit my application asap or wait a few weeks until some additional volunteer activities come through. do secondaries give you amply opportunity to update your application, or am i screwed if i don't put it down on the initial application?

The application includes so much information and volunteering is just a small part. Don't delay your entire application just for volunteer activities - it isn't worth it. I sincerely doubt adding this one more thing is going to make or break your application. Just go for it. You can always bring it up during your interviews. Good luck!

If you are certain that you will be volunteering, I would just put it down. You should try to send your application in soon.

I disagree with this. I see where dr. z is coming from I just disagree because
1) What if you, for whatever crazy reason, don't end up doing this volunteer activity? Then you've got some misinformation on your app
2) You're submitting a post-dated check! In other words, you have an application submitted July 24 with volunteer activities listed as August 1. It just doesn't add up.

But this is just my opinion. I'm sure it'll work out.

Good luck!

thanks, everyone, for your thoughts! hmm, about the post-dated check thing, i actually shadowed a volunteer at the hospital last night for orientation and have an official orientation on wednesday. assuming my tb test is clear (will know that tomorrow), i don't see anything that would prevent me from actually volunteering, and i guess my start date would be yesterday. would it be okay to add that to me app now, especially if i mention that i'm still being trained?

I assume that you are talking about your primary app. Just list you will be volunteering and when you get your secondary apps list your volunteer time to date.
