I applied last cycle and ended up on 6 wait lists with no acceptances. I applied July 27th and was verified early september.. completed my secondaries from september --> october. I am thinking it was a combination of bad interviewing and a late application that resulted in no acceptances. I completely rewrote my personal statement and did a better job reflecting on my work activities. In addition, since last cycle I added 2 new activities which can be seen below. I am worried that the fact that my application hasn't changed much will raise red flags. Any advice on my school list would be much appreciated!

Essentially I am asking what are my chances for this upcoming cycle as a re-applicant at my old schools and a new applicant at the new ones i listed. I don't want to go DO but at this point I am considering submitting a DO application just in case. Thank you and sorry for the long post!

You should be OK this time around. Make sure to apply early and brush up on interview skills. MCAT is probably too low for NYU or U Miami. VCU, being a state school, might agree. Suggest adding SLU, Wake Forest, and all new programs in MI, VA, PA and FL.

You're also perfect for any DIO program, so don't forget that NYCOM and Touro-NY are in your backyard.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Anyone know how the schools I was wait listed at this cycle will view my re-application considering I didn't really change much? And how bad will it look not having a new LOR from the activities I did during this past cycle?

Suggest adding SLU, and since they're in your backyard, NYCOM and Touro-Harlem. But, if you've improved your interview skills, and apply early, things should be just peachy this time around.

For the MD application, I recommend deleting Tufts, USC and NYU at a minimum and substituting some new schools (marshall and Oakland...).

Marshall and Oakland are both public institutions. Are they OOS friendly since they are new?

I just wanted to say your application has changed a lot in the last cycle in my opinion and the things that you've done in the last year are great!!!!

Oakland is public, but the med school is private. So it is about as OOS friendly as any other school.

Thank you for the advice. I am considering applying to Tufts, NYU and USC anyway even though I know they are reaches and a few more hundred dollars is worth the slim chance for me.

I wouldn't use the term lower tier school, but I would recommend you apply to FIU in Miami, excellent school and with your stats I think you'll get an interview. I would recommend you add another school which has average stats around yours with less than 5000 applicants. Go through MSAR.

Thanks for the advice. However after checking MSAR only 19 students OOS matriculated, seems low

I have doubts about Marshall; suspect they prefer WV and neighboring state residents. Suggest dropping USC; otherwise, list seems good, and good luck!

I have a similar MCAT score as you (12/9/11) and I think you have a good range of school lists. Good idea on not adding FIU, UM is the only FL school you should apply to. Also, whoever said your mcat is too low for Miami...there average is a 32 and yes the 8 may be low out it still falls in their 10th percentile (I'm pretty sure).

Anyways I think you have a good list mine look similar but I applied to a few more reaches just for sh*ts. My only recommendation would to be add wake forest and good luck!

Also I noticed St Louis wasn't on there. I was recommended to apply to this school on SDN and since I didn't know anything about the city (Fl resident) or school I did some research and I really like the program. Consider that one also!

Marshall only accepts OOS from states adjacent to WV. From the admissions website:

"As a state-assisted medical school, Marshall gives preference to West Virginia residents. However, a percentage of positions will be available to well-qualified nonresidents from states adjoining West Virginia, nonresidents who have strong ties to West Virginia or to students who are introduced to our school through our out of state recruitment pipeline and outreach programs."

Thank you for the advice. I just can't help but wonder if I rushed into re-applying. Schools that rejected me or waitlisted me last year aren't giving me any specifics in regards to ways I can improve my application. Does anyone see any gaps or weaknesses (aside from the low VR score, mediocre GPA and interview skills) that I can improve on during this year?

Try adding vermont, they're pretty friendly to ny residents

Added vermont, FIU and wright state. Committee letter didn't come in until Aug 1st so I began to get marked complete since then. Is that considered late? I'm a little bummed out since as a re-applicant I wanted to apply as early as possible.

Drop Keck-USC since even California residents have difficulty getting accepted there. The St. Louis and Oakland medical schools mentioned previously are good recommendations. Oakland does not give IS preference to Michigan residents. You should also consider Creighton ( median MCAT 30 for matriculated students ). Western Michigan is accepting applications for its initial class in 2014 and they are a private school. Northstate Sacramento may be accepting applicants for its inaugural class later this year so check their website periodically to find out when this will occur. There is such a thing as bad luck and in your situation, with 6 wait lists and no acceptances, that is as good an explanation as any. Consider the 2 NY DO schools as a backup plan. Remember, 5 years from now all that matters is that you have graduated from an MD or DO school and you are then in a position to apply for a license to practice medicine.

Bumping this. Anyone with more suggestions -- I pretty much have identical stats to OP (but CA resident) and would love to hear more options for schools to add.
