can some1 explain where the heck Endocervix is...is it in Uterus or in Cervix???

i tried using online but it doesnt help...

also when they say "cervical os" do they mean internal or external os?

thanks for the help..this repro stuff is really annoying

Think of the cervix as a tube.

The part of the tube inside the uterus is the endocervix.
The part in the vagina is the ectocervix.

"Cervical os" usually refers to the external opening (in the vagina).

os is latin for mouth if that helps you to remember it.

so when we say squamous cell carcinoma of cervix by hpv 16, 18.....are they referring to metaplasia of mucinous exocervix into squamous cells and eventual dysplasia into SCC...........OR just dysplasia of squamous cells of endocervix into SCC. goljan mentions metaplasia and dysplasia of transforming zone ( i dont get where that is)

The transformation zone is where the endocervical columnar mucosa transforms into the squamous mucosa thru the process of squamous metaplasia. Thus the transformation zone is in the early phase of immature squamous metaplasia and then progresses to squamous metaplasia and eventually mature squamous epithelium. The main issue of this process is that HPV prefers to attack the immature squamous metaplasia... it cannot infect mature squamous mucosa and has a difficult time infecting columnar/endocervical tissue...
also the transformation tends to migrate from puberty to mature adult from outside the cervical os to inside the cervical os...any good path text will explain this process
