Republicans push to make "Trump Derangement Syndrome" a mental illness
Five Republican Minnesota state senators are pushing for the term to be included in the state's definition of mental illness.

I thought they don’t believe in mental illness? Would they treat this with sugar pills? Nope. Antidepressants? Nope. Antipsychotics? Nope. Vaccines? Nope.

Sure in this specific instance, because the governor of MN will simply veto it if it even got that far. However, is it that far fetched to begin weaponizing these types of things for political gain/control? The "new" FBI under Kash Patel is trying to investigate Habitat for Humanity for crying out loud and Trump keeps pushing for going after the media because "they aren't fair to me and that should be illegal."Meh, though absurd, the fact is that stuff like this gets introduced all the time in state legislatures and never go anywhere, they just get more play now. The MN DFL has a one seat majority in the Senate and a deadlock in the House. This ain't going anywhere, it's just a waste of time for the reps who introduced it to pander to their MAGA bases in rural MN.
This was also commented on a lot on Reddit (where I initially saw the article) with people pointing out the Soviet Union tried to weaponize mental illness as a way to deem dissidents as "unwell" and as a way to take rights away.
It's going to fall on many in our very profession to call this nonsense out and also refuse to be a part of it. It's obviously a sham "diagnosis" with no bearing in reality but you're right it can also be a method to disarm political rivals which is chilling.Depending on how this case goes,

Supreme Court takes up challenge to Colorado ban on "conversion therapy"
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to weigh in on the constitutionality of Colorado’s ban on “conversion therapy” – that is, the effort to “convert” someone’s sexual orientation or gender […]www.scotusblog.com
Maybe a form of conversion therapy to treat Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Also, this speaks to a much larger problem. If Trump Derangement Syndrome falls under the mentally ill umbrella, it's a method to remove arms from their political rivals.
What a super efficient use of time and money!Meh, though absurd, the fact is that stuff like this gets introduced all the time in state legislatures and never go anywhere, they just get more play now. Rhetoric can be dangerous especially when you have the people with power vested in them able to enforce these types of things.

You’re assuming they’re still following the system and the checks and balances completely. It likely won't even come up for a vote, and if it did, it has zero chance of passing, so Walz doesn't have to do anything. We should be aware of these things, but we should also be aware that this is nothing new. I'm more aware than most about what bills are introduced and never make it out of committee. I've seen far more absurd and dangerous bills, in less polarizing times.
You’re assuming they’re still following the system and the checks and balances completely.
Like the court order to return hundreds of deportees and specifically stating planes in the air with them return to US soil… which the Trump administration ignored.
Or simply removing history and facts from government websites for “DEI reasons.”
Sure for now they’re still , mostly, using the courts to “appeal” and “challenge” and also still using “bills” and “votes” but this kind of dangerous bill opens the door to further testing the guardrails and limits of our societal contracts and agreement of law.
I agree with you however there’s some clear warning signs that the system you’re trusting to keep this nonsense from becoming reality is being pen tested and pushed against to see where the weaknesses and flaws are. Plus simply putting this absurd bill out there gets attention and there’s many people who happily voted for Trump and Republicans who said clearly they would use the system against political opponents.
I mean, in fairness it’s not like all the entries in the dsm are based on equivalent levels of science*, and their existence is voted in and out in committee meetings. In reading this, I drifted off to an imaginary land as I considered what it would be like to legislate health conditions into or out of existence. What’s next - making it illegal to have cancer or heart disease?

Sure it’s a disturbing and extreme example but it started with legislation of mental health and other conditions as being “defective to society.” Including classifying and institutionalizing “dissidents” as “mentally defective.” Scary stuff.
Amazingly, not a drag queen. One of the bill authors was arrested for soliciting a minor.

That guy's barber is probably less surprised. Does he just walk into the shop and say, "gimme the chomo"?Nearly no one in MN is surprised that Eichorn was arrested for something like this.
I still don't understand the difference between:Amazingly, not a drag queen.

I still don't understand the difference between:
a. the dudes who like dressing like parodies of ladies, while reading to kids
b. the fez wearing dudes who like to drive tiny little cars, while getting funding for kids' healthcare.
I don't want to do either of those things, but I don't understand why one is considered a sexual threat, and one is just accepted.
My best guess, and I'm being serious, is that the conservative dudes most stridently against drag queens, actually find them attractive, hate themselves for it, and need to direct that hate outward.

Hard to shake off all of itThat is most Freudian thing I've ever read from you.
Is that why they need to take a wide stance on the restroom?
It’s almost as if the various GOP excuses are not actually about what they claim. Just look at bathroom bills that vilify certain groups of people while ignoring the research that suggests the largest perpetrators of sexual violence against women: heterosexual Caucasian men, often with a religious affiliation. That guy's barber is probably less surprised. Just because certain men from particular political backgrounds are CONSTANTLY obsessing over children’s genitalia doesn’t mean they are also constantly thinking about sexualizing children. It’s not like they have also advocated for invasive “investigation” of children’s anatomy while also trying to pass child bride laws to legalize marital rape of children. Next you are going to claim that religious leaders from certain religious sects are covering up rampant sexual abuse that goes back decades. It’s not like they want to replace school counselors w untrained religiously-based people who can further interfere with stopping the abuse by not being trained to address actual abuse. My best guess, and I'm being serious, is that the conservative dudes most stridently against drag queens, actually find them attractive, hate themselves for it, and need to direct that hate outward.
Sorry, didn’t you hear that courts don’t exist anymore?GOP Senator Eichorn should demand that law enforcement release the evidence from their “supposed” sting. It is probably full of DEI bias and woke ideology. We know how much this current administration preaches about transparency and accountability. We also don’t know the extend of the waste fraud and abuse that happened during the sting, so we should really dig into the details and make sure EVERYTHING is made public so Eichorn isn’t railroaded. No one wants a U.S. citizen to be railroaded bc of unfounded claims.

Next you are going to tell me that calls for “religious freedom” and to stop “persecuting Christians for their beliefs” are not actually about those things either!
It’s not like this legislator is yet another example of the actual types of sexual predators out there we should be worried about instead of drag queens and teachers.
Oh wait….
