Gopher-brain did a fantastic job with the prior Neuro Residency FAQ, but it is time for an update.

I'm going to parse through and freshen up the posts that already appear in the current FAQ, but I wanted to solicit from you all, dear readers, any additional requests for content to be included. It doesn't necessarily need to be things you don't already know, but rather should be things you would find useful if you were a medical student just joining this forum and considering a career in neurology.

Thanks.

Something I would find helpful which I have seen done on other forums here on SDN, is recent applicant profiles of course on an anonymous basis that include things like step1/2 scores, class rank, research, lor's, maybe spread over different tier programs which would provide applicants valuable insight into there actual competitiveness. Thanks

A good idea, although you're going to have a hard time convincing your colleagues to divulge that personal information. We've been through this before in past years.

Additionally, the mean variance from program to program is high enough such that without a large number of samples you aren't going to have sufficient power to detect true differences between programs, or even tiers.

Some examples for reference might be nice, though. Any takers? PM me if interested, and I can put together profiles anonymously.

I think more information on how to apply for preliminary programs would be useful. I remember when I was planning to apply for prelims I had no idea how many to apply to, which ones to choose, or what sort of strategy to use when applying. Talking to other residents, I eventually figured out that some people applied to prelims in every city, others just to a few in places they had a connection, and still others only applied to categorical programs. It would have been nice to have this information when I was starting out.

Not sure if this is possible or worth doing since it will eventually go out of date, but it would be a nice perk, as well, if we could provide a list of what neurology programs fall in each category (guaranteed categoricals, linked programs, completely independent programs).

since research in neurology is going to be one of the hottest area in coming time, a section focusing on opportunities in research in and after neurology residency will be really encouraging for students thinking of making a career in neurology.....

and yes, i strongly support on providing practical info on how to and other questions related to preliminary in Neuro....

PreM1 here (ie read at own risk) 🙂.

I think it might be useful to more specifically address the issue of neurology being a diagnostic w/ no decent treatment specialty (drawing parallels to some medicine subspecialties when appropriate). Even as a prem1, ive met lotsa people round where i work saying this.

maybe a more thorough discussion of the abms subspecialties (vascular, neurophysio) and the more popular nonabms ones too (i always hear lots about interventional neuro, neurointensivists, neurohospitalists from people on the forum. Distinguishing them can be nice too. Neurooncology is another one. Not sure if of these 4 though are "popular" or not). One can sorta make it like the internal medicine subspecialty forum's sticky (brief overview of the subspecialty, typical length of fellowship, competitiveness, etc).
